United Kingdom: Judge ignores victim's impact statement and gives Emil Gorecki, 23, probation after his banned Pit Bull attacked ten-year-old girl

UNITED KINGDOM -- A Polish man returned to Wales to face justice after his illegal fighting dog attacked a 10-year-old girl on Deeside.

A warrant had been issued for the arrest of Emil Gorecki, 23, following the incident in September 2016 which left the girl with serious injuries to her arm.

Appearing at Wrexham Magistrates Court, Gorecki admitted owning the American pit bull dog which sank its teeth into the girl after she had stopped by the Polish man’s back yard to stroke a kitten he owns.

Gorecki, who walked up to the court building wearing a sweatshirt sporting the words “Pit Bull” in silver letters, spoke to confirm his name, date of birth and address and followed proceedings with the aid of an interpreter.

This was done to mock that little girl who was mauled by his Pit Bull.

Justin Espie, prosecuting, said at about 7.30pm on September 9 the girl had left home to visit a friend but, after finding she was not in, she returned home down an alleyway.

She saw a kitten at the rear of the defendant’s address on Chevrons Road, Shotton, and as she stopped to stroke it she noticed a very aggressive-looking dog looking at her from the patio window.

The dog had then run out from the house and sniffed the 10-year-old before jumping up and latching on to her arm with no warning.

In her statement the girl described it as a “hard bite” and “very painful” but Gorecki, then 22, had managed to hit the dog causing it to loosen its grip.

Gorecki’s sister then took the girl inside the house where she removed her coat and Gorecki tended to her wounds with a towel.

The little girl described feeling “frightened and upset” and although she could not understand what Gorecki and his sister were saying she realised they wanted to take her home.

On taking her home, the Polish pair tried to explain what happened before her mother called an ambulance.

At the hospital she was found to have a deep laceration to her arm requiring stitches and she was put on a course of antibiotics and painkillers.

The dog was seized and taken to an undisclosed location where it was examined by a police dog handler and confirmed as a prohibited American pit bull.

A victim statement by the girl’s mother was read to court which said the girl could no longer put weight on her arm and was scared to do handstands.

The mother added her daughter struggled to lift herself out of the swimming pool and how the incident had completely changed her outlook.

The scarring was permanent and she had become self conscious and covered her arm at all times.

David Matthews, defending, claimed Gorecki, who was accompanied by an interpreter, was “extremely sorry” and added he was “shocked” as the dog had never behaved aggressively before.

Gorecki claimed he had bought the dog two years previously in Stoke-on-Trent and believed it to be a Stafforshire bull terrier after having it inspected by a vet and the RSPCA.

Where's the proof that he had it "inspected by a vet and the RSPCA" and that they agreed that it was a Staffordshire pit bull?

SURPRISED OWNER
He claimed the dog had always been safe with children previously.

“[The Pit Bull] behaved in a way that was completely out of character,” said Mr Matthews who added that although Gorecki was fond of the dog, he had no objection to it being destroyed.

A probation report from Andrew Connah said the Polish man had returned to Wales to resolve the matter and although he was intending to return to his homeland where he had a four-month-old daughter, he would take full responsibility and would stay at his sister’s house for the duration of any punishment.

District judge Gwyn Jones said: “I’ve listened very carefully and taken into accout the impact this has had on the young girl. It has had a physical impact through the marks on her arms which young girls take very seriously and it has also impaired her confidence about doing things 10-year-old girls should do.

“You acted properly, you controlled the dog, provided care for the girl and ensured she was taken home – but the lack of safety measures could have been foreseen by you.”

Mr Jones sentenced Gorecki to 26 weeks in prison for the first offence of being a person in charge of a dog dangerously out of control causing injury and 18 weeks for the offence of possessing a fighting dog.

Both sentences are to run concurrently and were suspended for a year.

Gorecki will also carry out 180 hours of unpaid work and not be allowed to own a dog for six years.

He must also pay £600 compensation alongside £85 costs and a victim surcharge of £115.

Mr Jones also ordered that the dog is destroyed.

United Kingdom: Boy, 7, in hospital after being savagely attacked by dog at Stoke-on-Trent beauty spot

UNITED KINGDOM -- A seven-year-old boy is being treated in hospital after being attacked by a dog at a popular beauty spot.

The youngster was savagely bitten on the leg as he returned to the car park at Westport Lake in Longport following a walk with his family.

He is now undergoing treatment at the Royal Stoke University Hospital for a severe wound.

The dog – believed to be a Staffordshire pit bull terrier – ran off when adults intervened but no owner was in sight.

Now police have launched an urgent appeal for witnesses following the attack, which happened at 5pm yesterday (January 31).

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: “There were a number of other people in the area at the time and these potential witnesses are urged to come forward.”

Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting incident number 686 of January 31.

Westport Lake, created alongside the Trent & Mersey Canal, is Stoke-on-
Trent's largest expanse of water and consists of two lakes, and a nature reserve.
It's one of the best places in the area for bird-watching and walking.

United Kingdom: Man and his dog attacked by loose Pit Bull while simply taking a walk

UNITED KINGDOM -- Alex Wood posted on Facebook January 23, 2018 at 7:01am ·

I just don’t understand how some people own dogs!

Be careful if your walking your dog, my Dad and Alfie were attacked over Central Park yesterday evening around half 6.

The dog is a Brown Brindle Staffordshire Pit Bull terrier and owner is a young black male around 20 years old. The dog had deliberately left his owner to attack Alfie who was over 100 meters away.

"PIT AND RUN"

The dog is dangerous so avoid coming into contact!

What a nice way for my Dad to spend his birthday. Obviously the wine helped.

United Kingdom: While telling us his dog was attacked by a Pit Bull, owner wants you to know this "isn't a post to make people think Staffies are dangerous".

UNITED KINGDOM -- Brad Smith posted on Facebook January 7, 2018 at 10:35am ·

Please be careful all dog walkers if your planning to use McLaren St Field. My usual destination to take Murphy for walks.

Sadly today he was attacked by what looked like a Staffordshire pit bull Terrier which has resulted in a puncture wound to his chest and Neck.

Murphy is well and will be going the Vets tomorrow to be cleaned up. Vets have already been contacted and I’ve spoken to a Vet on the phone. The guy had two dogs both on leads as was Murphy.

APOLOGIST
This post isn’t a name and shame and it certainly isn’t a post to make people think Staffies are dangerous as I know lots of people who owns these dogs and they are Ace!

This is a post to make sure people who have dogs keep them under control especially if they have an aggressive temperament.

There’s nothing wrong with walking aggressive dogs just keep them away from other peoples dogs or use methods to stop this from happening such as muzzles.

United Kingdom: Owners run off with their Pit Bull and Mastiff mix after it mauls man and his pet Border Collie

UNITED KINGDOM -- Police are investigating after a horrified pet owner fought off two dogs to protect his beloved pet in a vicious attack.

John Purcell, who is still at home recovering from his injuries days after the attack, says Daisy is lucky to be alive after she was mauled by a Staffordshire pit bull terrier and a Mastiff cross on the Warwickshire Moors.

The service engineer rushed to the aid of the six-year-old Border Collie as he wrestled the dogs off her and took her to safety.

The dog needed stitches after her chest was ripped open by the monkey bridge in Bolehall, near Tamworth.

John said: “It was horrific. If my partner Lettie had been walking Daisy she would never have been able to fight them off. I feel like I have been in a punch up. My fist is swollen and I am bruised and stuff and aching all over. Daisy is really subdued now. She is not her normal self.

“There could have been kids around, it really does make you worry. Who knows what those dogs could be doing right now.”

Recalling the moment it happened, John, 51, from Bolehall, said he was walking down to the bottom of Moor Lane on to the fields and the railway bridge.

“It was flooded so I went up to Bolehall Swifts and on to the bridge instead,” he revealed.

“Daisy was off her lead like she normally is as she is a good dog and always comes back.

“As we came off the bridge out of nowhere to the right I saw these two beasts coming towards her. The two owners were obviously caught off the hop and unaware and the dogs started attacking Daisy.

“I was rolling around on the floor holding on to Daisy and trying to fight them off. They ripped her belly open and were biting her chest.

“I just had to protect my dog. I knew that if they rolled her over on to her front they would have probably killed her.

“I managed to get Daisy behind the bushes and out of sight and I calmed her down after about three or four minutes. I looked back and the two owners were running off. By the time I got back they had completely disappeared.

“I rushed back home in a panic after warning friends that I walked past. Daisy was in a right state so Lettie took her to the vets and I went straight on the phone to the police.”

Partner Lettie Woodward added: “It was a deep wound. The vet told me that she might need a drain and that she was very lucky it wasn’t her neck. She had stitches in her chest.

“The photos show no perspective in relation to size. The wound is about 17 cm long and the puncture wound is about 1 cm.

“It could have been a lot worse. It was just lucky I hadn’t been walking her that day like I usually do. If they had gone for her throat or there wasn’t a strong man there to hold them off she wouldn’t have stood a chance.

“We ask people to be vigilant especially over Warwickshire Moors as we feel until the police find those responsible it is only a matter of time until these dogs attack again.”

A spokesman for Staffordshire Police confirmed that an investigation is underway.

He said: “We were called to reports of a dog being attacked by two other dogs at around 12pm on December 28, 2017 in Moor Lane, Bolehall.

“The dogs that attacked were described as a white and tan colored large Staffordshire pit bull terrier and a white with black and brown patches Mastiff cross.

“No arrests have been made and we are continuing to investigate the incident with the assistance of the victim.

“If you know anything about this incident, please call 101 quoting incident number 243 of 28 December or, for guaranteed anonymity, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Australia: Woman needs her jaw rebuilt after being mauled by neighbor's Great Dane / Pit Bull mix

AUSTRALIA -- An Adelaide woman has needed more than 200 stitches to put her face back together after a vicious dog attack on Boxing Day.

Ashley Bunn, 45, was walking home from her sister’s house in the city’s western suburbs of Adelaide when she was attacked in the street by her neighbor’s Great Dane / staffordshire Pit Bull terrier mix.

Surgeons used 200 stitches to reattach a large portion of her chin which had been torn off.

They also used skin and tendons from her forearm to repair the damage.

“When I looked in the mirror I just burst into tears, I didn’t know if I would ever look the same again,” Bunn told Channel Ten.

The woman’s jugular vein was also damaged in the attack, causing major blood loss.

She has spent the past fortnight in hospital receiving treatment. Despite being discharged from hospital it seems she will require a further 15 surgeries to repair the damage.

Bunn told Channel Ten the dog was playing in a yard near her home without a gate when it started running towards her.

The dog’s jaw latched onto her chin and ripped at it, causing significant damage.

“His teeth went underneath [my chin] ... and he gripped on with his upper jaw. I had 200 stitches in my face because I felt my own chin come down,” she told Ten.

Bunn posted on Facebook saying that the dog has since been put down.

The dog’s owner faces a $10,000 fine under strict South Australian dog attack laws, Channel Ten reported.

This is something everyone needs to know. Me and my friend decided to have a walk with the dogs (beagle and poodle) at white waters Park in Waltham Abbey 4pm yesterday when man with a white Staffordshire Pit Bull with black markings came up and his dog after couple of sniffs, [attacks] my dog.

Scene itself was ugly as you can imagine, he [attacked] my dog's tummy, was trying to bite on a sides, and when I hit the attacking dog few times with heavy handle of my dogs' leash it was over.

The idiot was saying dog is alright which obviously wasn't. I've check my dog, looked fine at the moment and we continued our walk, got home.

And then my husband took my beagle to the shower where he started to bleed and he found two big wounds. Ended up in vets, paid bill over £100 and now my boy is on 10 days antibiotic course and inflammatory /painkillers medicine.

Need to go tomorrow and after tomorrow for checks and sleep with him tonight to make sure he is not bleeding more, his temperature is not going up.

WTF (sorry for my French) is wrong with people???!!! Next time it can be someone's child, be careful and PLEASE PLEASE report it to police. Make pictures if you can, spread the word around as it's really increasing. It's not a first time for us this year but this time it was the worst.

North Carolina: Marinna Rollins, 23, who laughed as she filmed herself tying her service dog to a tree and shooting it dead - before posting the footage on Facebook - commits suicide

NORTH CAROLINA -- North Carolina police are investigating the possible suicide of an Army veteran charged with shooting her service dog as she laughed.

Fayetteville Police Lt. Todd Joyce said Sunday investigators believe that 23-year-old Marinna Rollins killed herself.

Joyce declined to explain what evidence detectives found. He says police were called to her apartment early Sunday around 3am after her body was found by friends, who were having trouble contacting her.

Rollins and her 25-year-old boyfriend Jarren Heng were charged last month with cruelty to animals after investigators say they tied the dog to a tree and shot it multiple times with a rifle.

Cumberland County District Attorney Clark Reaves said the two could be heard laughing on a video recording they made as the dog was killed. That video was later posted to Facebook.

Rollins' suicide comes just nine days before the two were scheduled to appear back in court. Animals rights activists had scheduled a protest for outside the courthouse the day of the hearing, May 16.

Court documents show Rollins received a medical retirement from the Army in January.

Her family and friends say she struggled with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder after a traumatic experience while serving in South Korea.

Authorities say the dog was adopted by Rollins' estranged husband Matt Dyer, who left the dog he named Huey behind with his wife before being deployed to South Korea for a year.

'I felt like her having to take care of Huey would be good for her and would be good for Huey,' Dyer said, according to WNCN.

While he was away, Rollins had the dog certified as her emotional support dog, and renamed him Camboui.

On either April 16 or April 17, authorities say Rollins and her boyfriend took the dog to a wooded area where they shot it to death.

The two reportedly tied the dog up to a tree and then Heng filmed Rollins shooting the dog to death.

Rollins reportedly laughed in the video and then Heng asked if he could shoot the animal as well. Heng shot the dog five times with a rifle in quick succession.

In the video, Rollins can also be heard saying 'It's been real ... I love you, you're my puppy, you're a good puppy, but...'

The video then seems to show Rollins dragging the dead dog's body around before burying him in a shallow grave.

'Kind of put him a little deeper,' Heng then appears to say.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and Cumberland County Animal Control said they found multiple videos of the killing and also text messages talking about it.

A Justice for Cam Facebook site sprang up almost immediately, and a screen grab purporting to be from Rollins' Facebook page shows someone who appears to be Rollins saying 'Great last day with the pooch! Sad he has to go, but he will be much happier where he is heading off to :)'

When confronted by Animal Control officers after the killing, the couple said that the dog cost $75 a week to feed and had some health issues.

Heng was serving in an Army Special Operations Command Unit at the time of his arrest.

Australia: Two pit bulls attack elderly Jack Russell, each grabbing an end of her trying to rip her in two

AUSTRALIA -- A 13-year-old Jack Russell could lose feeling in her back legs after being mauled by two American Staffordshire Pit Bull Terriers in front of her family.

Toni Cowie said she was walking with her son and dog, Jackie, in south-east Melbourne on Monday afternoon when the two pit bulls  suddenly lunged at them.

'One was attacking her face and the other was attacking her legs,' the 34-year-old mother told 9News.

Ms Cowie said she helped fight off the pit bulls, injuring her knee in the process, and rushed Jackie to the vet.

Jackie has a broken leg and several horrific bite marks can be seen on her stomach and backside.

She may also have nerve damage and could lose the use of her hind legs.
Jackie will receive treatment at a vet clinic over the next few days, Leon Salter, who shares the dog with Ms Cowie, said.

I know this sounds dorky and I'm sure non-Americans roll their eyes whenever we say things like this, but the video clip interview with Leon Salter is awesome. He sounds like Crocodile Dundee :) He says that the pit bull owner manned up and came over to apologize to him.

I couldn't figure out how to embed it but here's the direct link to the video clip on Nine News Melbourne if you want to watch it.

The pit bulls have been seized by the City Council of Casey and an investigation is ongoing.

It is believed the pit bulls escaped from a gated yard.

'It's not good enough dogs like of that nature should be muzzled and behind gates,' Ms Cowie said.

'I love her. I'm shattered. I'm shattered that at the age of 13 she has to go through this,' Mr Salter added.
