Illinois: Animal cruelty, marijuana suspect Deon Nailing back in county jail

ILLINOIS -- A man who awaits sentencing for beating a dog to death is now accused of planning to sell marijuana.

Deon D. Nailing is currently at-large after failing to return to jail after he was released for treatment of a medical condition, according to records in his case.

Nailing, 36, of Charleston was arrested on March 6 for reportedly having nearly 3 ounces of marijuana that was packaged for sale.

That was four days after he pleaded guilty to a charge of aggravated cruelty to animals for allegedly beating a pit bull to death on Feb. 1, 2016, in Lerna, where he lived at the time.
Deputies were first dispatched to Lerna on Feb. 1, when a woman said Nailing threatened to harm both her and the dog. Nailing was also questioned and claimed the dog caused the bruising the deputies saw on the woman, she said.

Deputies were called back to the scene the following day, when the woman claimed Nailing hit her and had killed the dog and buried it, Stephen also said. Investigators couldn't find any signs of a burial but later located the dog's body and the mallet in the trash bin, she said.
Records in the newly filed drug case say Nailing was released from jail on March 7 to go to Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center for treatment of a medical condition.

He was then transferred to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. On March 11, Carle notified Coles County authorities that he had been released, the records said. However, after that Nailing did not report back to the jail as required, according to the records.

Records in the case also say a "confidential source" notified police about seeing marijuana at Nailing's residence, leading to the search of his home where the drugs were found.

Nailing then told police he received the marijuana from another person in order to sell it but then had "reservations" and hid it in his residence instead.

His sentencing hearing in the animal cruelty case is still scheduled for June 9.

If Nailing is ultimately convicted in the marijuana case and receives prison sentences for both convictions, the two prison terms would have to be run consecutively.

The charge in the new case, possession of cannabis with intent to deliver, can bring a prison sentence of three to seven years. However, Nailing is eligible for a maximum of 14 years because of a 2010 conviction for having marijuana planned for sale.

The animal cruelty offense can result in a prison sentence of one to three years. Prison time isn't required for the charges in either case.

After his arrest for the marijuana offense, Nailing was jailed with his bond set at a level that required $2,000 posted for released.

During a court hearing earlier this week, Coles County Circuit Judge Brien O'Brien ordered a new arrest warrant for Nailing and set an additional $3,000 bond.

Florida: Puppy’s chances improve after being brought in with mouth bound shut

FLORIDA -- As Eve Van Engel gently stroked the head of Pixie, a 1-year-old Yorkie mix, she described the animal’s recovery from having its mouth taped shut.

Staff at the Paws 2 Help animal clinic arrived Monday morning to see that Pixie was eating and making gradual improvement, Van Engel, the clinic’s founder, said.

“When they came in this morning, you’d think we’d won the lottery,” she said. “(At first Pixie) wouldn’t eat, couldn’t eat. Last night she ate some food. This morning she ate a whole jar of Gerber baby food.”

Veterinarians have been working since Saturday to save the life of Pixie, who was dropped off with her mouth bound so tight it cut to the bone. Pixie had an elastic hair tie around her snout that cut a 3/4-inch-deep gash between her eyes and nose, Van Engel said.

“But she’s already so much better than she was Saturday afternoon when she came in,” Matthews said. “I wasn’t real hopeful Saturday afternoon but I feel a lot better today after seeing her.”

The wound was so gangrenous that the little dog “smelled like horse manure” when she was dropped off, Van Engel said, and it’s unknown when the dog last ate. If Pixie doesn’t develop sepsis, she should survive.

On Monday, veterinarian Lisa Matthews said necrotic tissue still has to be removed from Pixie’s snout and the dog is receiving pain medication and antibiotics.

“She’s already so much better than she was Saturday afternoon when she came in,” Matthews said. “I wasn’t real hopeful Saturday afternoon, but I feel a lot better today after seeing her.”

Who bound the dog’s mouth shut is unclear.

Two women dropped off the dog at the clinic’s location on Forest Hill Boulevard near Florida Mango Road on Saturday, Van Engel said. They gave multiple conflicting accounts and couldn’t say exactly who bound the dog’s snout.

“The stories went on and on and over and over and changed,” Van Engel said. “Nothing added up.”

One woman said the dog had been passed around, unwanted, among family members, she said. Another one said it had been in her father’s care.

“The young one said, ‘Well, we think a neighbor kept complaining about the dog whining or crying or something, and so the neighbor came and put it on. It was all right when I walked it two days ago,’” Van Engel recalled.

Van Engel said she believes the hair tie was on the dog’s snout for much longer than two days.

Her clinic is used to seeing animals with horrible injuries from accidents, but Pixie’s case was shocking, Van Engel said.

The case is similar to the dog in South Carolina whose owner taped her mouth shut to stop her from barking in 2015. Photos of the dog sparked outrage, and on Friday, her owner was sentenced to five years in prison.

“There are more of these happening than people want to know,” Van Engel said. “Neglect of animals is as cruel as actual injury for them.”

It shouldn’t take long for Pixie to find a new home. One of the clinic’s employees plans to adopt her, Matthews said.

Utah: Pit bull which already attacked a dog previously now tries to rip family's Dachshund in half

UTAH -- Chris Conrad added 3 new photos to Facebook — feeling bummed.
March 27, 2017 at 11:46pm ·

My little 10-lb dachshund, Penny, was munched from behind by a pit bull.

Today was her second surgery. Very sad! I'm thankful for pain meds.

This was the dog's second attack on a small dog.

It's been reported by the vet so we'll see what happens to the pit bull.

There was no warning, no growl, no bark , just teeth.

Lena Petrukhnova - Poor baby. I'm so so sorry Chris. This hurts my heart.

Heather Landry - Thank God she survived. Those are horrific injuries. 😢 It's just like a pit bull to attack without warning.

Lisa Padgett - I'm so sorry to see this. Please do not wait for anyone to do anything because it likely won't. You're likely going to have to fight for it. This dog will do this again. Once they start - it's usually game on.  :(

Legina Newman Boswell - This makes me angry. Twice? Get a gun and learn to shoot that beast.

Missouri: Chihuahua named Captain Jack mauled by pit bull; may lose his leg

MISSOURI -- On Saturday the 25th while my sister was out of town for the weekend she got a call from her friend letting her know that her dog had been attacked by another dog while out on a walk.

He was eventually able to get the dog off of Jack and get Jack back in the house.

The pit bull stayed outside scratching at the door for about 10 minutes making it impossible for Brian to get Jack to the vet as soon as possible. The pit was picked up by dog pound and so far no owner has come forward leaving my sister with a huge vet bill and a seriously injured baby.

After 2-1/2 hour surgery yesterday they got the internal damage fixed up and will be keeping an eye on his leg to determine if he will be able to keep it.

My sister says don't be to sad if he loses his leg he'll just have to live up to his name of Captain Jack Sparrow and get him a wooden leg!

He is such a sweet baby and we are all happy for Brian quick response and of course for Zoey (her other dog) fight to save her friend. Anything you can do to help take some of the burden off my sister would be greatly appreciated!

While away on a quick weekend trip my boy Jack was attacked by a loose dog on a routine walk with a friend who was dog sitting.

Once again Jack proved to be Superman and has no life threatening injuries but suffered a big gash missing from his abdomen and very traumatic injury to his front right leg. He spent 36 hours in the ER on pain medicine until we were able to fly back last night and get him.

It's been a rough couple days but we found a wonderful doctor who's been taking really good care of him today. After 2.5 hours in surgery he was able to patch up his abdomen but the fate of his leg is play by day situation and how it heals over the next couple days.

He currently has drainage tubes and will remain overnight at the doctors. For those that know Jack knows he's proven many times to be indestructible and this is no exception. He is the toughest little guy I know.

Thankfully the dog was picked up by animal control and owners have yet to come forward. Thank you to those that have reached out and showed your concerned for our furry kid. Also a big shout out to Brian Murray for showing no mercy to get that coward dog to let loose of Jack. No doubt in my mind there would have been a different outcome if you didn't take the actions you did. Thank you is not enough.

I'll continue to update as Jack goes through is recovery journey. Oh and Jack also wants people to know not to feel sorry for him if he loses a leg. He already has his peg leg picked out and is fully prepared to live up to his full given name... Captain Jack Sparrow.

North Carolina: Owner upset after poodle attacked by pit bulls

NORTH CAROLINA -- A Concord dog owner is still nursing her pet back to health after it was attacked by two pit bulls this past weekend.

The woman, who asked that WBTV not reveal her identity for safety reasons, said she just wanted to take her standard poodle, Diego, for a walk Saturday. She did not expect the horrifying situation that followed.

The woman said she was just a couple blocks away from her home in the Brandon Ridge neighborhood when the incident happened. She said two dogs loose in another yard charged at her and Diego. They were pit bulls.

“Both of them were on him. I just started screaming at the top of my lungs,” said the woman.

Neighbors heard her screams and jumped in to help. She said the attack seemed to last a long time.

“I was trying to get that dog off of him and the two neighbors were also. What if that dog would have turned on us because we were trying to get it off so much? It would have been a whole different situation,” she said.

Once the neighbors eventually got Diego away from the pit bulls, they rushed him to an animal hospital. He has several flesh wounds and needed stitches for his bite injuries. Diego’s owner said the poodle appeared to be in shock and in pain for multiple days.

“He wouldn’t sit. He wouldn’t lay. He just stood there and I felt so helpless. I didn’t know what to do for him,” explained the woman.

She was surprised to learn no penalty would be coming for the pit bulls or their owner.

Officials with the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office said that because the incident was entirely dog-on-dog, North Carolina state law does not allow for criminal charges to be pressed against the dogs’ owner.

Officials said a civil claim could be made because the dogs were off of their leashes. The owners have not been cited yet and the dogs cannot be seized because a human was not attacked, according to officials.

“I don’t think anybody should have to go through this knowing that nothing can be done to these dogs because it was a dog-on-dog attack,” said Diego’s owner.

Officials told WBTV the incident is still under investigation.
