California: Zixuan Liu brutally beat, stomped and kicked his young dog; gets no jail time

CALIFORNIA -- A man who was caught on camera shockingly abusing his puppy will not serve any jail time.

Zixuan Liu pleaded no contest in a San Francisco court last week to criminal animal abuse against his 10-month-old Shiba Inu, Aniki.

The 26-year-old was filmed by an elevator security camera dragging his pooch along the ground outside the lift, before pulling Aniki back towards him and kicking him in the head.

Once inside the elevator, Liu waited for the door to close and then stomped on the 10-month-old pup’s head three times.

He then picked Aniki up by his snout and carried him to the elevator door, before dropping him to the floor as the door opened.

The 26-year-old then delivered another hard kick to Aniki to get him out of the elevator, with the boot sending the poor dog flying out into the hallway.

Liu was arrested on May 13, according to San Francisco Animal Care and Control.

The group said in a statement that part of the 26-year-old's plea included provisions meaning he will not be allowed to have a pet in future, and he must complete community service work, attend counseling sessions, and cover the costs of Aniki's care at its shelter.

He will also serve three years probation.

Vet staff at the shelter treated the pup for cuts and bruises, while also having it play with other animals as a way to improve his mental state.

San Francisco Animal Care and Control said it is pleased with the punishment handed down to Liu.

You must have low expectations if you're happy with him getting probation. This wasn't neglectful cruelty, as in his dog was riddled with parasites which made him lose weight. This was overt animal cruelty - a deviant, psychotic drive to torture and abuse a helpless creature.

'We're pleased with the outcome of this case,' executive director Virginia Donohue said, ABC7 reports.

'Animal cruelty is horrible. Animal Care and Control strives to help the animals who are victimized and hold abusers accountable for their actions.'

District Attorney George Gascón added it was important to punish Liu - and any others who abuse animals - because it is a 'reflection' on the city.

'Anytime we can prove that animal abuse has occurred, we will hold offenders responsible in a court of law,' he said, according to ABC7.

Aniki has been sent off to an animal shelter in Nevada, which will handle the 10-month-old's adoption process.

Interestingly, no mugshot ever released. This likely means he had an attorney who was able to prevent its release. Which means he and his family have money.

United Kingdom: Four-year-old girl is left scarred for life after being savaged by a stranger's crazed pit bull that mauled her face as she went to get an ice cream with her mother

UNITED KINGDOM -- A four-year-old girl was left scarred for life after a stranger's crazed pit bull mauled her face as she went to get an ice cream with her mother.

Ellie-Mai Dewis, from Nuneaton, was bitten in the cheek by the out-of-control dog moments after she stepped out her front door.

The pit bull, which was unknown to the family, ran up to the toddler and sank its fangs into her face in front of her horrified mother, Stephanie, 22.

The toddler was left screaming in agony and needed 20 dissolvable stitches put in her right cheek following the attack.

Mrs Dewis claimed the stocky, tan coloured dog, believed to be called 'Tig', was with four young men aged around 18, who ran away when they saw Ellie-Mai's injuries.

Ellie-Mai was rushed to University Hospital in Coventry, and has struggled to eat, or drink after the terrifying ordeal, which happened at 7pm on Monday.

Mrs Dewis, a carer, said: 'I feared for her life, I really did. Ellie-Mai had been cleaning her room, and as a reward I promised her an ice cream from the local shop.

'It's seconds from our house, so I had no fears whatsoever about taking her there. We had walked less than a metre out of my front gate when it happened.

'I noticed the dog was off his lead, but thought nothing of it at first. It was with four 17 or 18-year-old boys, so I thought that it would be under control. But from nowhere it just rushed at Ellie-Mai. This dog just ran at her, jumped, bit her face and knocked her to the ground.

'It was all over within a matter of seconds, and I didn't have time to react to it at all, because it was a big, angry dog.'

Mrs Dewis said she carried Ellie-Mai back home 'screaming in pain' as the cowardly men ran off.

'It's the worst thing that a mother can ever see, your daughter lying flat on the floor lying in a pool of blood,' she said.

'The lads called the dog's name, Tig, and it rushed back over to them. I don't think that they were aware of how badly she had been injured at first.

'The four of them ran off when they saw her covered in blood. I carried her back home, as she screamed in pain.

'I covered her in a towel and called my step-mum, who is a first-aider.

'She came and took one look at her, and said she wasn't happy with it and called the ambulance and the police.

'She had a massive bite-mark in her cheek, and a bruise on her shoulder from where she was knocked onto the pavement.

'She's recovering now, but is having to take antibiotics and painkillers every two hours. She's in more pain now as the strong medication has worn off. At the moment she's having to drink through a straw, and is struggling to eat.

'I tried to take her out to the shop the other day, but she saw a dog there and immediately wanted to go back home. This is something that could scar her for life.

'I really didn't pay much attention to where the dog's owners went, as I was much more concerned with getting Ellie-Mai inside. Any help or information to myself or the police would be much appreciated.'

Warwickshire Police are now hunting the dog and its owners.

PC Ruth Phillips said: 'This was a horrible attack on a young girl that will potentially leave her scarred for life.

'The owners of the dog made no attempt to check she was alright and instead decided to run off.

'We're keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the attack or recognizes the description of the dog.'

Anyone with information can contact police on 101.

Australia: Residents fight off a pit bull with a child's SCOOTER after it knocked over a toddler and viciously attacked a woman on a Sydney street - before turning on another dog

AUSTRALIA -- In the aftermath of a vicious dog attack, local residents used poles and a scooter to stop the animal from injuring another dog.

An escaped pit bull was on the loose on Old Kent Road in Greenacre in Sydney's south-west, when the canine caught a whiff of a spit roast and entered the front yard of a home where a birthday party was taking place.

The dog ran up to a two-year-old child and knocked her down before a woman, who was trying to intervene, was bitten on the leg.

She suffered a non-serious bite wound to her ankle and was treated by paramedics at the scene.

Another woman was scratched by the dog during the incident.

The dog then ran on the road and started to attack another dog before two men used a pole and children's scooter to separate them.

In footage from the scene, one man is seen swinging a scooter up in the air before smashing it into the animal.

Later, the video shows a man - alleged to be the violent dog's owner - taking his animal away.

Another man, believed to be the owner of the other dog, also appears in the footage collecting his pet.

A witness told Daily Mail Australia they saw a man drive to a nearby property with the dog who attacked the woman, before police made a visit to that home later.

A police spokesperson confirmed officers attended the incident around 2:15pm on Saturday afternoon.

She said the matter has been referred onto Bankstown Council.

Ohio: 47 cats removed from Laurie Patterson's home, which had been condemned last year. Ammonia levels exceeded those seen in meth labs

OHIO -- A Lucca Street home deemed by many the "worst house" they have ever seen, was the site Monday morning where 47 cats and two turtles were removed due to unsafe living conditions.

"I'd take a meth lab any day of the week," said Jason Waddell, senior agent with the Medway Drug Enforcement Agency, which was called in to help at 354 Lucca St.

"In my 17 years in law enforcement, this is the worst house I have ever seen," due to what he said was "animal, and probably human waste," throughout the house.

"It's basically a large toilet," said Linda Applebaum, Wooster's law director, who was also on the scene. She said there is "toxic ammonia," and no litter boxes in the house.

She noted this case was "complicated" and took a long time to resolve because Wayne County does not have a humane agent, an issue she is going to work on moving forward.

"We need to come together as a community ... and ask these questions. Why does Wayne County not have a humane officer?" Applebaum said.

Waddell and Medway were called to help remove the animals as ammonia levels were too high for first responders to handle without any form of respirator or breathing apparatus. Those ammonia levels exceeded those seen in meth labs.

An average meth lab, Waddell said, averages between 50 and 60 parts per million (ppm) of ammonia in the air. This home on Lucca Street registered 70 ppm. He added the issue was exacerbated by the fact they couldn't open any doors or windows for ventilation, otherwise the cats would run outside.

And even after a few hours at the scene, Waddell told Wayne County Humane Society workers to stop going inside the house, as their equipment was not suited to handle the concentrated levels of ammonia.

"We had the equipment they needed," Waddell said, of the breathing suits Medway uses for meth lab calls.

Monday's search warrant was the latest event in an ongoing saga involving Laurie Patterson, the occupant, said Justin Reed, Wooster's property maintenance inspector.

Patterson was sent to Heartland Behavioral Health Care in Massillon on July 5, as she was found incompetent to stand trial in her second case brought against her by the city for property maintenance violations.

Reed said the city brought two cases of property maintenance violations against Patterson due to the deplorable conditions inside the home.

Court records show the home was deemed unfit for human habitation and condemned to be demolished, unless it was repaired.

An affidavit filed by Reed in Wayne County Municipal Court states that during a November 2015 inspection of the home, "the property was littered with rubbish, garbage, filth and animal waste. It was apparent the cooking facilities had not been and were not useable."

Follow-up visits yielded no progress and the home was condemned on June 20, 2016.

Yet, Patterson continued to reside at the home and another inspection in November led to a second case filed against her for residing inside a property deemed unsanitary and unfit for human habitation.

She was found incompetent to stand trial in the second case.

Reed said Monday that the house will be torn down, but the cats first had to be removed.

"This is the worst house I've ever been inside of," Reed said Monday at the scene.

Medway and Wooster Police were on scene, along with the Wayne County Humane Society to take care of the cats, per its contract with the city of Wooster for cat control services.

Alice Stanford, executive director of the WCHS, said this case is one of the worst she has seen personally.

The cats were taken to the humane society facility where they were cleaned and their initial health issues documented. Numerous cats were covered in fleas, some had hazed-over eyes and many were underweight.

It appeared to everyone at the scene that the cats were inbreeding with each other and not properly cared for. At least one cat removed from the home was pregnant; several other kittens appeared to be born one day ago.

Stanford noted that their specific health conditions would not be known until their vet checked each cat out.

Applebaum said it is her intention to bring an animal cruelty case soon and a hearing will be held within 10 days regarding the cats.

"This is a drain on our resources and the humane society's resources," Applebaum said, adding that having a humane agent could have resolved the issue "sooner; we would have less cats."

Alabama: Jodi Scott, 23, and her boyfriend Devin Hulsey, 23, abandoned their pets to die, say police

ALABAMA -- Two local people are facing animal cruelty charges after their pets were found bound with no access to food or water earlier this month.

It’s suspected the canines and pig had spent at least 10 days in these conditions.

The home on Rocky Branch Road where the animals were abandoned was last known to be occupied by 23-year-old Devin Kaine Hulsey and his girlfriend 23-year-old Jodi Melissa Scott.

Tuscaloosa County Deputy Martha Hocutt is assigned to animal cruelty cases in the county. She says it’s a wonder these animals survived these deplorable conditions.

“There was no way for them to escape,” she told WVUA 23. “With the heat index being over 100 degrees on any given day, if you don’t give animals water or food, it can kill them,” Hocutt said.

Today, the three dogs are recovering at the Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter where they will eventually be up for adoption. And their brother the pot belly pig, he is recovering in a foster home.

"Leave them to die. Leave them starving. I'll never understand it," said the neighbor who alerted authorities.

On Wednesday July 28th, Hulsey and Scott made TSCO's most wanted list. Scott turned herself in on Thursday, July 27th, and Hulsey turned himself him on Friday, July 28th.

"I thought a lot of them before this happened. And would've never expected them to do something of this level," said the neighbor.

Despite Devin Hulsey being issued a bond of $14,500 and Jodi Scott getting about a $12,000 bond, they were somehow able to come up with the required amount (probably 10% = ~$2,400) and the couple bonded out of the Tuscaloosa County Jail shortly after booking.

Alabama: Le Ngoc Pham and Hoan Cong Nguyen indicted on 81 counts of animal cruelty charges; together get $1.4 million dollar bond - which they immediately post and are released

ALABAMA -- A Dothan couple has been indicted on numerous charges of animal cruelty after animals were found in deplorable conditions inside their home.

According to court documents, Le Ngoc Pham and Hoan Cong Nguyen have been indicted on 65 counts of dog/cat cruelty and 16 counts of cruelty to animals.

The two were arrested in March after law enforcement officers received a tip that led investigators to their home.

According to Dothan investigators, officers found several dogs confined to spaces where they were lying in fecal matter. The animals also had inadequate water and food.

Nine puppies were also discovered inside a freezer, causing investigators to believe the home was being used as a puppy mill.

Each had bonds totaling $702,000, for a grand total of the two being $1,404,000. If they were typical bonds, they had to come up with 10% - more than $140,000 in cash.

Arrested and booked into the Dothan City Jail and then because it being a felony booked into the Houston County Jail were: Hoan Cong Nguyen (aka TONY NGUYEN), male, age 47 and Le Ngoc Pham, female age 34.

Both subjects arrested have been released on bonds following their arrest.

The subjects listed an address of 2913 Peachtree Drive Dothan Alabama. On the paperwork filed in the court system, Pham listed her occupation Luxy Nails Spa and Hoan Nguyen (aka Tony Nguyen) is the owner.

Nguyen listed his employment as "self employed" in the remodeling business.

Documents say Pham’s trial date has been set for September 18, while Nyguyen’s trial date has been set for November 13.
