Accused cat killer, Donovan Mackey's animal cruelty charge heads to Luzerne County Court

PENNSYLVANIA -- A city man accused of killing his girlfriend’s cat now faces an animal cruelty charge in Luzerne County Court.

Donovan Mackey, 20, of North Pennsylvania Avenue via video Thursday waived his right to a preliminary hearing before District Judge Martin Kane.

Police say Mackey on April 13 caused a cat’s death when he put it in a washing machine and slammed it against a wall.

Kane forwarded Mackey’s cruelty to animals charge to county court and allowed the withdrawal of a disorderly conduct charge with the understanding Mackey would negotiate a guilty plea with prosecutors.

“I really have a cold heart for this man,” Kane said.

Mackey remains incarcerated at Luzerne County Correctional Facility, held on a detainer related to $334 in unpaid fines from two traffic violations.

According to police, Mackey went looking for his girlfriend — who was not home — at her North Main Street residence.

He allegedly captured the woman’s cat, placed the animal in the washing machine and turned it on.

Police say Mackey then wrapped the cat in a bed sheet and slammed it against several walls, putting holes in some of the walls.

When the cat was dead, police say Mackey put its carcass in a garbage bag and tossed it in back yard.
