Upon arrival, officers observed a dog commonly referred to as a “Pit Bull” attacking it’s owner in a back room of the residence.
The door to the room was inoperable due to remodeling, so there was no way for the officers to contain the dog. Once the officer stopped the TASER from cycling, the dog recovered and began to charge toward the door.
Officers Reed and Cody Baker stayed between the victim and the dog. Officer Baker fired two rounds at the dog. Both rounds struck the dog and it was immediately killed.
In the video, you can hear a woman saying she can't believe the dog did this, that it's never acted like this before. Typical 'surprised owner'.
Shelby Fire and Community EMS arrived on scene and treated and transported the victim direct to Ohio Health Med Central Mansfield Hospital for treatment.
The victim was transferred from Med Central Mansfield early this morning for additional treatment and subsequent surgery at a Columbus Hospital.
"It appears based on a review of the incident and the officer’s reports, that shooting the dog was a necessity." - Shelby Police Chief, M. Lance Combs.

***FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE***
Dog Attack/Shooting
On 12-10-16 at approximately 10:13 PM, the Shelby Police Department received a 911 transfer regarding a dog attack on Joelynn Drive.
Upon arrival, officers observed a dog commonly referred to as a “Pit Bull” attacking it’s owner in a back room of the residence.
Officer John Reed deployed his TASER on the dog during the attack, which gave the victim enough time to break free and get out of the room. Because the door to the room was inoperable due to remodeling, there was no way for the officers to contain the dog.
Once the officer stopped the TASER from cycling, the dog recovered and began to charge toward the door. Officers Reed and Cody Baker stayed between the victim and the dog.
Officer Baker fired two rounds at the dog. Both rounds struck the dog and it was immediately killed.
It appears based on a review of the incident and the officer’s reports, that shooting the dog was a necessity. Officers Reed and Baker did a phenomenal job of working together, reacting quickly, protecting the residents, and neutralizing the threat.
Shelby Fire and Community EMS are to be commended for such a quick and professional response.
