1 dog dead, another malnourished as Yulee woman charged with animal cruelty

FLORIDA -- One dog was dead, found Saturday by Jacksonville police confined in a bathroom at an abandoned home in the 1600 block of North Loyola Drive. Another severely malnourished dog was found still alive inside the Northside home.

Now a 29-year-old Yulee woman is charged with cruelty to animals/causing intentional cruel death and unnecessary suffering and impounding or confining an animal without sufficient food and water, according to police.

Cathy Lynn Easter of the 85000 block of Trinity Circle was jailed Saturday on $20,000 bail.

An officer was flagged down at 8 a.m. by a motorist and told to look in the home, police said. The officer looked through an unlocked bathroom window and saw the dead animal with no food or water, while the malnourished dog was seen through another window. Police called the city's animal control division to handle the dogs and found the home's owner working at a nearby restaurant and questioned her.

Easter told police she moved out of the home in January after the power was cut off, adding that she had left food and water for them. She said a guide dog service was supposed to pick the dogs up, but she never checked to see if it did.
