Australia: Puffin the six-month-old Shar-Pei barely survives attack by Mastiff

AUSTRALIA -- This my Puffin. He is 6 months old. He was attacked by a Mastiff that was at least double his size and weight. If you can, please share his #gofundme account. He needs a lot of treatment.

Puffin has quite extensive injuries to his face, head, ear, chest and leg.
He was found barely breathing and in severe shock.

It is likely that he will need multiple surgeries and medications to get him through.

He is my companion in life and all I have. It breaks my heart to see him so utterly broken. If you can please put my Puffin back together again so he can continue to be my best friend.

UPDATES:

#1
I have bought Puffin home to closely monitor him. He has multiple surgeries ahead. He will most likely lose an ear and muscle from his neck. The vets were unable to close up his exposed neck for the time being. He has a great risk of presenting with a collapsed lung due to air getting in. He has got 10 drains in to drain blood and fluid so they can reassess and attempt to repair more. His arteries, blood vessels and Trachea are all exposed and there is a risk that there is damage to his trachea causing breathing troubles. We are not clear of danger yet and he is on a lot of pain relief and antibiotics.

Thank you to everyone who has donated and those who continue to send love prayers and support to us.

#2
Puffin made it through the night. Big blessing.
He has cried most of the morning hours so I sat with him and told him about how much love everyone is sending him. More surgery today unfortunately but it has to be done. We are such a long way away at the moment. Thank you to everyone for all the support.

Puffin when he was a little puppy

#3
Today has been a good day and a bad day. It’s a good day because the vet is pleased with how his injuries look. Today is also a bad day because Puffin will not eat at all and will only have little bits of chilled water from a syringe about every half an hour. It’s not enough to keep him well. He has been given two injections of long acting antibiotics and some more pain relief.

He’s fighting hard and everything is looking good. I pray that we keep heading in the right direction and down go backwards which is still a very real risk. His muscles are starting to break down what has died so hopefully we can start getting it all stitched back together soon.

What a day!
I am so pleased to find that Puffin has perked up today. He has started to drink from his bowl and is looking so much better for it. We are still on a long medication regime of pain killers and anti inflammatories. The vet checked in with us today and they are pleased with his progress as it means he is becoming stronger and that means that we can start looking at the next stage of his treatment. He is now up and moving a little bit, though he will only come out for a few minutes before going back to sleep. Small steps lead to greater things. The hope is that he is resilient enough that we can reinforce positive interactions with other animals over time. There is no rush on that and only time will tell. Much love to everyone and thank you for all you have done for us

(December 2017) Oklahoma: Veterinarian removes 21 baby pacifiers from Shar Pei’s stomach

OKLAHOMA -- A veterinarian in Oklahoma has quite a tale to tell after removing 21 pacifiers from a dog's stomach.

The veterinarian at Gentle Care Animal Hospital said he had to share the story because "this was the most fascinating and exciting surgery I have ever done..."

A local couple recently had a baby and were wondering what was happening to all of their child's pacifiers.

One day, the child's grandmother saw the dog, Lovey Dovey, jump up on the counter and take off with one.

The couple told the veterinarian that Dovey had slowed down her eating and had been vomiting a little phlegm for a few days, but other than that, they said the dog seemed fine and that they hadn't noticed any other changes.

When Dovey vomited up a pacifier one day, the couple decided it was time to take the dog in for an x-ray, according to the hospital's Facebook post.

Judging from the x-ray, the local veterinarian believed there were between 7 to 9 pacifiers in the dog's stomach.

However, during surgery, the veterinarian found 21 pacifiers in the dog's stomach!

Fortunately, Dovey is doing great and gets to go home today, the veterinarian told KFOR.

"Dog’s will eat anything, anytime and at any age so always be watching!!!" the veterinarian posted to Facebook.

So fair warning, some people may find the following series of photos disturbing!! I have to show them for two reasons, first, this was the most fascinating and exciting surgery I have ever done or my staff has ever been a part of. We love Dovey, and she is doing GREAT post op. Dr. Dad (who incidentally sutured my forehead together last year when the leaf blower fell off the shelf in the garage onto my face!!!) and Mom recently had their second beautiful child but were having a missing binkie dilemma, then grandma saw Dovey jump up on a counter and take off with one. She recently had slowed down her eating and vomited a little phlegm for a few days but other than that was acting fine. When she vomited up a binkie, plus the story from grandma, dad brought her in for an x-ray. You can see the binkie’s stacked up in the stomach, we counted 7-9. Well......by the end of surgery we had pulled 21 out of her stomach. That is the second, and most important, reason I am sharing these photo’s. Dog’s will eat anything, anytime and at any age so always be watching!!! Thank Dr Dad and Mom for letting me share this with clients!!

Florida: 12-year-old dog rescued by firefighters after falling into bay

FLORIDA -- Call it Junior’s lucky day.

On Thursday, the nearly 12-year-old Chinese Shar-Pei and Rottweiler mix got lost from his Miami Beach home, fell into Biscayne Bay, was rescued by a firefighter and later was reunited with his owner thanks to some social media magic.

The rescue and reunion were posted on the Miami Beach Fire Rescue’s Twitter page.

The story began around 10 a.m. Thursday, when Jose Ruiz was out for a run and got a call from his dad alerting him that Junior, who normally sleeps under a backyard tree until noon, was gone.

The Miami Herald reports Ruiz raced home, walked through the neighborhood looking for the dog and then drove around to search. Later he posted a photo of Junior on Instagram and printed some fliers.

By then, firefighter Emilio Sanchez had spotted the dog struggling to swim in the water behind a home about a block from its home.

Sanchez jumped in and helped the 50-pound dark-haired dog to shore with an assist from other firefighters.

The rescue was captured on cellphone video, which quickly hit social media and local television stations.

“He was very exhausted, just by the way he was breathing, and he was already barely able to keep his head up out of the water,” Sanchez told WPLG. “So I pretty much got there in good timing. He was very eager to see me and he was happy I was there.”

Firefighters dubbed Junior “Champ” before handing him over to police.

A woman who runs a pet-reuniting service in Los Angeles helped to reunite the dog and his owner after spotting news reports about Junior and seeing Ruiz’s Instagram post. Helen Trimble contacted Ruiz and sent him the stories. He headed to City Hall, where he was reunited with Junior.

Ruiz tells the Herald he has no idea how Junior got into the bay.

“He doesn’t like water. He doesn’t even like to take a shower,” Ruiz said, who gave the dog a shower Thursday night to rinse off the salt water. “I think he’s had enough water for a while.”

Junior spent the rest of Thursday evening on a pillow, too tired to move.

“He is just completely exhausted,” Ruiz said. “I am just so happy to have him home.”

Florida: Shar Pei puppy named Sushi is attacked by a Pit Bull which broke her jaw in two places. Does it surprise you that the Pit Bull owner won't pay the bills?

FLORIDA -- Gianna Rosello posted on Facebook July 16, 2017 ·

My shar pei was attacked by a pit bull. She's already fighting pneumonia. More info online please donate so she can be fixed up we really appreciate every little dollar from the bottom of our hearts.

Our beloved 3-1/2 months old Shar Pei is fighting for her life. Our dear "Sushi" got attacked Friday afternoon by an unleashed Pit bull while she was out for a bathroom stop with her two human sisters (3 and 11 year old).

The Pit bull approached the girls out of nowhere and Sushi stood in front of them trying to protect them. She was badly injured and left in a very rough shape.

"Sushi" was already fighting aspiration pneumonia and was making a recovery but due to this attack that nearly killed her, her chances of survival were exponentially diminished.

We are asking our friends and family for financial assistance as she will need immediate surgery to reattach her jaw (broken in two different places) and save her life.

Due to the urgency and complexity of the procedure she will need to be seen at UF in Gainsville and the owner of the Pit bull is not really coming through with his responsibility.

Plans are under way to take this matter to a civil court but until that gets resolved we are in the need to cover her medical expenses and other financial burdens related.

Much help is appreciated and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

Massachusetts: Gwen Blumberg, 28, thought it would be a good idea to leave her Lab-Shar Pei mix locked in her car while she shopped at Target. Police disagreed and arrested her.

MASSACHUSETTS -- A Massachusetts woman was arrested in the parking lot of the local Target Saturday after a passer-by called police out of concern for a dog in a minivan.

When police arrived, they found a Labrador-Shar-Pei mix  in a van where the windows were left cracked two inches and the temperature inside was 84 degrees, Merrimack police said in a statement Monday.

“Officer Minihan spoke with the owner who admitted to leaving the dog in the vehicle and Officer Minihan observed the dog was panting extremely heavily and appeared in distress.

"After further investigation it was determined that the dog had been left in the vehicle not running for 30 minutes,” they said.

Police charged Gwen Blumberg, 28, of Marlborough, Mass., for animal cruelty, she was taken to police headquarters to be fingerprinted and a mugshot taken. This all went without incident, Merrimack police said.

Blumberg was released on $2,000 personal recognizance bond and her court date set for 8:15 a.m., Aug. 9, at 6th Circuit COurt - District Division - Hooksett.

Michigan: Appeals court rules 3-0 and tosses charges against owners Debra Olney and husband Daniel Ridge whose pit bull mix got loose and seriously mauled a lawncare worker on a neighbor's property

MICHIGAN -- The Michigan appeals court has thrown out charges against an Eaton County couple whose dog got under a fence and repeatedly bit a lawn care worker.

Debra Olney and husband Daniel Ridge were charged with owning a dangerous animal that caused serious injury.

Roscoe got under the fence in 2015 and ran over and attacked a woman who was spraying fertilizer and weed control on a neighbor’s lawn.

The appeals court says prosecutors failed to show that Roscoe had previously attacked a person, a key point necessary to send the owners to trial. The court says Roscoe’s past aggression against a fence and lawn mower tires doesn’t count.

The dog was described as a pit bull and Shar-Pei mix. The 3-0 decision was dated Tuesday and released today.

Texas: Gary Kennedy, 55, sentenced to 15 years for beating puppy to death with metal rod in 2014

TEXAS -- A 55-year-old man who beat a puppy to death with a metal rod in 2014 has been sentenced to 15 years in prison, according to Animal Care Services.

Gary Kennedy was arrested about two weeks after being caught on surveillance footage hitting a young shar-pei and stuffing its body into a trash bag on July 3.

According to ACS, Kennedy plead no contest to the crime and was handed the maximum sentence allowable due to the nature of the beating and prior conviction for violent offenses.

In a statement release on Tuesday ACS Field Supervisor Audra Houghton said the conviction should set a benchmark for animal cruelty cases in Texas.

“We know there’s an established link between animal cruelty and human violence that must inform our response to these cases,” Houghton said. “This conviction supports addressing that progression of violence and stopping it before hurting pets turns into hurting people.”

Arizona: Three dead dogs found at Tonopah home, Karl Giddings, 37, and his mommy Kathy Giddings, 61, charged with animal cruelty

ARIZONA -- Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputies have arrested a man and cited that man’s POS mother in a gruesome case of animal abuse in Tonopah.

Karl Giddings, 37, has been arrested and charged with one count of failing to provide shelter for an animal and  one count of failing to provide medical treatment to an animal.

His mother, Kathy Giddings, 61, was cited for three misdemeanor counts of failing to provide medical treatment and four misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty.

The arrest and citation followed a 3-month investigation into alleged animal abuse and neglect at the Giddings’ property.

Back on March 23, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says his deputies received a tip to investigate the welfare of a few animals in Tonopah.

When they arrived at the home, deputies found a dog which appeared to be dying. Detectives removed the dog from the Tonopah property and rushed it to a veterinarian. Four hours later, the dog died.

Detectives also removed an additional four dogs, six tortoises and one donkey from the Giddings’ property

When Animal Crimes Detectives returned to the Giddings’ home earlier this week, they found 2 more dogs and four puppies in ill condition, along with two dead puppies.

The four puppies and two dogs were seized and taken in for immediate veterinary care, but two more of the puppies died.

“We will continue to crack down on the abuse of animals,” Arpaio says. “We are in the hottest summer months, reaching extreme temperatures fast, and will not tolerate any kind of animal abuse."

Not guilty verdict a blow to humane treatment of animals

MARYLAND -- Former Baltimore City Police Officer Jeffrey Bolger has been cleared of any wrongdoing by a city circuit court judge in the senseless slaying of Nala, a seven-year-old Shar-Pei dog ("Ex-officer not guilty in dog's death," Nov. 20).

Jeffrey Bolger
In exonerating Bolger of any culpability in this case, Baltimore City Circuit Judge Melissa M. Phinn has inadvertently welcomed what should be a backlash of negativity from the likes of PETA and BARCS.

Her ruling has given license to Baltimore City Police Officers to utilize cruel and overly-aggressive tactics in any future cases involving supposedly rabid animals.

Witnesses told police that as Bolger got out of his vehicle, he said: 'I'm going to f****** gut this thing.'

This entire incident should have, and could have, been avoided. It's just another blow to the gut of the tireless efforts of local and national animal rights groups that have the mettle to stand up and speak against atrocities such as this.

There's a saying: "When you tarnish one badge, you tarnish them all." This judge is an idiot. This cop is a psycho.
