Texas: Family seeks justice after their 5-year-old daughter's beloved miniature pony named Chicken Nugget found shot to death

TEXAS -- Five-year-old Rylee Brett loved Chicken Nugget, her 25-inch-tall dwarf pony. When she was little, she would ride him around like a rodeo horse. When she got too big, he would sit down with the family and watch TV, reported KPRC.

Then, on the morning of Nov. 8, the family went outside to check on him in a fenced-in pen and found him shot to death at close range, reported the Houston Chronicle.

Kylee Brett, Rylee’s mother, posted the news to Facebook in an emotional message.

“RIP Chicken Nugget. You now have your wings and are flying high,” she wrote. “My heart is absolutely shattered as I try to find the words. The way you were taken from us was an act of a coward. Our smiles will never be quite as big as we drive through the pasture to watch you play.”

She added that “whoever stepped foot on our property and point blank shot him in the face will pay.”

The Bretts called the police and game warden to their ranch home in Hull, Texas. On Facebook, Brett wrote she had no idea who could have done the killing, but had some ideas for how it could have happened.

“There is no mistaking that they did it out of hatred,” she told WVTM.

“One theory of ours is a poacher did this to him that was spotlighting...the problem is, you don't mistake him as a deer within such a short distance while being with 4 other horses,” she wrote.

Spotlighting is a controversial hunting technique where hunters use bright lights to detect the reflection in an animal’s eyes at night and stun them, reported Lubbock Online.

Rylee’s mother wrote on Facebook that her daughter was “confused, sad, happy (when we talk about our sweet memories), mad, and devastated,” but that she had been encouraged by an overwhelming show of support from people across the country. “She still isn't understanding. Everyone's sweet messages and comments are truly making her see there is still so much good in the world!,” her mother wrote on Facebook.

The case truly has brought out prayers and well-wishes from people across the country. Brett’s original post has been shared more than 3,000 times, and in the comments, several people posted photos of their own ponies and horses and offered to send them to Rylee.

The family is still seeking answers in the case, and Rylee’s mother wrote on Facebook that police and the game warden told her they felt confident that Chicken Nugget’s shooting could be solved.

“Our hearts are broken,” she told KPRC. “Very broken, and we’ll always miss him, we’ll always have that piece of our heart that’s broken. But good memories always help the heart heal a little faster.”

RIP Chicken Nugget. You now have your wings and are flying high. You will never be forgotten. You will forever be missed. My heart is absolutely shattered as I try to find the words. The way you were taken from us was an act of a coward. Our family will always be one member short now and coffee in the mornings just won't be the same. Our smiles will never be quite as big as we drive through the pasture to watch you play. The creek feeders will have more feed and the calves will be lonely. Your horse friends no longer have a pit boss to guide them to their stalls. My daughters no longer have their best friend. I no longer have you to talk to.

Please help me find the words to explain to Rylee. Please help me cope to the fact Steelie won't ever get to have the memories we have. Please god help me understand. Why him? Please please please tell me why? Please pray for our family right now. Please fill me with the wonderful memories you have with Chicken Nugget, as I know so many people loved him. I know my granddaddy is feeding him cubes and apples right now. They are both loving it! I'm sure my Papa will enjoy his new fishing partner. Lord knows Chicken loved to pester you and knock the fishing pole out of your hands. I need so many prayers right now. Please pray.

******On another note******** whoever stepped foot on our property and point blank shot him in the face will pay. We have the police and the game warden here and I will personally be waiting to meet you. There is a special place in hell for you and I'm not scared to give you a first class ticket you pos!

UPDATE ON CHICKEN NUGGET:
We have never been so overwhelmed with love and support from family, friends, and strangers. Rylee woke up this morning and ran straight outside to see if Chicken Nugget had come back home. We had to explain that Jesus needed him way more then us and he was staying with him. Rylee said, " why can't he just come back alive, doesn't he miss me momma?" It shattered my heart all over again. I would just like to personally thank everyone for the phone calls, text, and fb messages. Also, I would like to thank Channel 2 News for contacting me and airing our story to get justice. I am trying to respond to everyone as quick a possible. We still haven't heard anything back from the police or game warden.

We have no FACTS at this point, so it's just a waiting game. I personally was told they recovered the bullet, but was just informed there was an exit wound... so no bullet (they like to keep the gory details from me, and I prefer it that way). We have no idea who could have been on our property to commit this awful act. We do however have some theories of what could have possibly happened. None of them justify the fact a trespasser coming on to OUR land and murdering OUR beloved Chicken Nugget in a fenced off horse trap with 4 other horses. One theory of ours is a poacher did this to him that was spotlighting.... the problem is, you don't mistake him as a deer within such a short distance while being with 4 other horses!!!!!

I've gone from crying to mad to absolute basket case all within 24 hrs. Rylee is confused, sad, happy (when we talk about our sweet memories), mad, and devastated. She has been through more then most 5 year olds ever have. Please continue to pray for our family and especially Rylee Klare.

UPDATE 11/10/17: the sheriffs department just left the ranch. They truly were concerned about our issue and made me feel a little better after talking with them. They feel very confident in solving the death of Chicken Nugget.

Thank you Channel 2 News for pushing the story to get Justice. Thank you Fox 26 for airing the story and helping spread the word! Thank you Houston chronicle for sharing our story as well. Thank you to my Family and friends, words cannot come to my mind at the moment to express my love and thankfulness. Y'all really have got us through this. Thank you to the complete strangers that I now consider friends, that have reached out and blessed us with so many prayers and well wishes.

I am doing my very best to respond to all messages. I apologize if I haven't wrote you back yet, as you can see our family has been overwhelmed with so much love and support. UPDATE ON CHICKEN NUGGET 11/11/17: no new news on the investigation, but some absolutely WONDERFUL news from supporters... Rylee was gifted Chicken Nuggets sister, from what was an absolute stranger to forever family friend now.

We were so reluctant to add another pony to our family at this time. So many people have asked me, "why wouldn't you just get her another pony and she can heal faster". I can quickly say Chicken Nugget WAS NOT A PONY. He was our child, Rylees brother, and a huge part of our family. He was the only ears that would listen to my Father in laws rambling and still continue to come back everyday to hear more. The cows breakfast/lunch/dinner partner. The horses pit boss. The one to put the biggest smile on your face in any kind of situation.

He was really so much more then just a pony. Since we were offered Chicken Nuggets sister, Rylee made the choice that she wanted her. I know so many kind and generous people have offered their own family pony, or to buy Rylee a pony, or donate money to get Rylee a new pony.

We are so grateful for the offers and know people truly care and love us. We do not want to profit off of any of this and hope people understand, we are not denying your help or trying to be disrespectful in declining your offer. The very sweet and generous gentleman that gifted Rylee with Chicken Nuggets sister set up a go fund me for the hauling and vet cost to get her to Rylee.

Any money that is made over the amount it cost to haul is being donated to SpiritHorse Liberty in Rylee and Chicken Nuggets name. This is a absolutely wonderful organization that has always has every bit of my respect and holds a special place in my heart. If you would like to contribute this is a legit go fund me page and i have shared it in my page for you to see.

We have been asked so many times now if JUSTICE FOR CHICKEN NUGGET shirts are being made. This really was no idea of mine, but brought up after a little joke was made... we are finding anything we can to smile right now. I guess people really want to get these made. I am going to talk to a family friend that makes shirts. How do y'all feel about the shirts if all proceeds also go to Spirit Horse in Liberty? I would love y'alls opinions and feedback on this.
Last but not least: I have had every emotion in the book. After the sheriffs department left yesterday they really made me feel more comfortable in finding the shooter. My feelings in this as of right now are:

You killed our beloved Chicken Nugget on OUR LAND!!!! So many people have asked us if it could possibly be a hunting accident. Well, when you trespassed and came on private property you can no longer call it an accident in my book. You invaded our horses home, our home, and my other family members home. There are many theories on how far the bullet traveled to reach Chicken Nugget. We have been told several things. Some say very close range some say 50/60 yards. Either way the distance of the bullet doesn't matter to me. The shooter disrespected my family and took a huge part of everyone's lives. Whoever did this shot right next to a place of residence and could obviously tell there was a home, barn, and pipe fence... it was not a wooded area. After they saw what they did they ran like the COWARD they are. This is my view on it and I want this person to pay!!!

Please continue to pray! If you know anything please contact the sheriffs department and help find justice for Chicken Nugget!

Florida: Police searching for the person who shot and killed family's pony

FLORIDA -- Mandi N Justin Harris added 4 new photos to Facebook November 11, 2017 ·

***Caution****
The below images are graphic.

I am offering a $1,000 reward for anyone with information that leads to the arrest of the person who committed this sick senseless crime of killing an innocent animal!

Last night someone shot my horse with a high powered rifle from my grandma's pasture in Jacksonville, Fl (oceanway area).

The Jacksonville Sheriff's office crime scene unit conducted a full investigation and believe the rifle was fired from the direction of either oceanway village or The Gillespie Gardens area between the hours of 10:00pm Friday night to 5:00am Saturday morning.

I will stop shy of nothing to find and prosecute this person to the full extent of the law. If you or anyone you know have information please come forward. Please share this post and help me find the person who did this.

If you have any information please contact the Jacksonville Sheriffs office and refer to case #769654 or feel free to pm me on Facebook.

*** Also the reason he is wearing a halter and lead line is because this was a birthday gift from my mom that I never had a chance to put on him so I put it on him before this picture was taken to bury him in***

Note: He added that last part because people began questioning, in their posts, why the halter and lead was on the pony... because of their confusion, they began questioning whether the story was legitimate.

(October 2017) Louisiana: Kyre West, 19, arrested and charged with Felony Animal Cruelty

LOUISIANA -- A 19-year-old man admitted he fatally shot a beloved Uptown street cat with a pellet gun after New Orleans police caught up with him using surveillance camera footage and a database of information sheets that cops fill out after stopping and questioning people, according to records filed in court Friday.

Kyre West, who was jailed Thursday on a count of aggravated cruelty to animals, [claimed] he did not have sights on his weapon and was unsure if he would strike the cat known as Blackie when he fired at it, according to police.

Police first learned about Blackie's slaying after an unknown caller reported seeing an injured cat outside Zeus' Place animal shelter in the 4600 block of Freret Street on Wednesday. Blackie was taken to a veterinary hospital but died there.

Investigators reviewed Zeus' Place's surveillance camera footage and noticed an older-model Chevrolet Corsica in the area.

One camera angle along the 2500 block of Cadiz Street showed the Corsica's driver point a long gun out of the driver's side window toward the cat, which suddenly fell on its side shortly before the car drove away.

Police also established that the Corsica's rear passenger window had been shattered and covered with a light-colored towel or bag.

Investigators then searched a police database of so-called field interview cards, which contain the names and personal information of people questioned by cops.

That database indicated the Corsica had been stopped Sept. 20 at Soniat and South Robertson streets, a few blocks from where Blackie was later shot. West was driving the car, which had the same shattered window, police said. He also matched the physical appearance of the man seen in the Zeus' Place surveillance video, according to police.

Police stopped West as he drove the Corsica on Thursday in Gert Town. He was taken to a police station for questioning and confessed to shooting Blackie, police said in court records.

Criminal District Court Magistrate Judge Harry Cantrell set West's bail at $25,000 Friday.

Assistant District Attorney Michael Henn said West does not appear to have any prior felony convictions or arrests.

In a statement Thursday, the Louisiana SPCA Humane Law Enforcement office said a tip it had received also led to West's arrest. The group said a caller contacted it with information about the Corsica seen in the surveillance footage.

Oregon: Joseph Sallman opens fire on his friend, injures him, shoots and kills his dog and a stray bullet kills a camel at an animal refuge

OREGON -- A man who fired dozens of rounds from a rifle and wounded a former friend he was feuding with also shot and killed a camel at a nearby animal rehabilitation center in southwestern Oregon, officials and witnesses said.

Joseph Carl Sallman of Grants Pass opened fire on July 1 near a group of cabins where he lived south of Cave Junction, Oregon State Police officials and witnesses said.

Across the Redwood Highway is the Tiger Preservation Center, where Camille the camel had lived for two years. One of the rounds struck the one-humped dromedary above the eye, said Robert Ringo, who runs the center.

Ringo said five or six bullets came close to him and other employees.

"We all heard bullets coming through the trees, and we heard one ricochet off of metal," he said. "We were trying to see where the shots were coming from."

He later found the camel lying wounded in the hay. Due to the holiday weekend, Ringo said he was unable to have a veterinarian look at Camille.

The camel died two days later.

Another bullet struck John LaRue, a resident of a trailer near the cabins who told the Daily Courier that he and Sallman were friends who'd had a falling out over two pistols LaRue had taken from him.

LaRue said Sallman starting shooting as LaRue drove past him in his truck.

LaRue said that he was sore, but recovering from his wound, and that his service dog had also died in the shooting.

Sallman, 30, was arrested on July 4 in Selma and charged with attempted murder, two counts of unlawful use of a firearm and one count of menacing.

He has not entered a plea, and is expected to appear in court on Wednesday.

Pete Smith, Sallman's court-appointed attorney, confirmed to The Associated Press that Sallman and LaRue knew each other.

"They had had a physical altercation in a dispute over the ownership of some firearms," Smith said.

Ohio: Horse Lured to Fence and Shot; Police Asking for Help Finding Suspect

OHIO -- In a rural pasture between Leesburg and Greenfield, a horse owner was awakened by the sound of a shotgun and a car speeding off.

She rushed outside to find her beloved mare had been shot in the throat / chest area.

“The lady was able to spend the last minutes with her beloved horse, she has had the horse for 15 years,” Samantha Spears wrote about her friend, the horse’s owner.

Police investigating the shooting believe the horse was lured to the fence, then shot point blank.

No information is available whether the horse was targeted on purpose, or if it was a random act of violence.

Texas: Five-year-old horse named Fiona shot and killed while in her pasture

TEXAS -- The Grayson County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a horse that was shot.

Jennifer Jones says their 5-year-old horse, Fiona, was shot in the pasture next to their home on Sears Road near highway 56 in Bells.

"We noticed a very small, very small hole in her side and we didn't even think it was a hole. We thought it was a scratch."

She says at first the family thought Fiona had rolled onto wire somewhere on their property.

But when they took her to the vet, they found out she had been shot in the chest with what they believe may have been a 22 caliber bullet.

"I think we're still in shock to be honest. At her loss and that it was a gunshot."

Fiona was put to sleep on Friday.

Jones told us she hopes the incident was an accident.

She says they have a creek right next door to their property where neighbors hunt coyotes and wild hogs.

"Somebody could have been hunting and if they missed, or went astray, it could have hit the horse."

But she says her vet thinks otherwise.

"Because of the placement, it looks like an intentional shot because it was right in her rib cage."

It's the fifth report of a horse being shot in this area over the last eight months.

"I'm sad more than angry that people would do something like that and I know that many people have had a loss and that's it. I'm more sad than anything."

Fiona's death is still under investigation.

Jones warns others to keep an eye out around their neighborhood, just in case.

North Carolina: Danny Roscoe was charged with 3 counts of Felony Animal Cruelty after shooting and killing 3 innocent dogs. His punishment? One year of probation.

NORTH CAROLINA -- Last year, Danny Lee Roscoe decided to go shoot some stray dogs that the community had been taking care of. There is nothing to indicate that these dogs were aggressive or a nuisance. They simply didn't have homes but animal lovers had set up doghouses and blankets for them and regularly come by to feed them and play with them. I'm sure they were also trying to find homes for them.

Anyway, Danny Roscoe - for whatever reason - decided to kill them. They may or may not have died quickly. A witness said it appeared they had been gut shot and shot in their hindquarters, as though they were running away from him when he shot them.

Authorities rightfully charged Danny Roscoe with three Felony counts of Animal Cruelty. There was an inkling that this case would not settle in a way that we would be happy when Danny Roscoe was given an unsecured bond, which indicates that they weren't taking this horrific crime seriously.

And, as expected, Danny Roscoe walked right out of court with a slap on the wrist. No mandatory community service, no mental health counseling to deal with his aggression/rage/hate issues, no fine mentioned to go towards victims' rights groups such as the local shelter.

Instead, they dropped the Felony charges down to Misdemeanors and it looks like they threw one of them out in an effort to get him to take the plea - which was nothing but probation. And then the judge threw him another bone by letting him serve the two sentences concurrently (at the same time) rather than consecutively (one after the other).

If you were bound and determined to give this cretin probation, why not make it consecutive and put him on probation for two years? Let him think about it for the next two years what horrible things he did to these three dogs.

I'm dumping on North Carolina because this is where it happened and this odious, pathetic excuse of a man lives there, but it's not just North Carolina. It's all the states in America that do this - it's almost a guarantee that the abuser is going to get probation and walk right out of the courtroom.

Animal Cruelty is not taken seriously in the United States

And that is why there are so many repeat animal abusers; because their punishment was so lax that they had no reason to fear committing the crime again.

However, there is a bright spot to this disappointing sentence. After Danny Roscoe cruelly shot and killed these dogs, the community was outraged. In response, people set up a makeshift memorial for the dogs and made it a nice, rather than somber and sad, place to meet. They're proof that there are more people alive in this world who are kind, compassionate, considerate and caring rather than hateful, lonely deviants like Danny Roscoe.

After Danny Roscoe shot and killed three innocent dogs, the '
community came together to remember these animals, which
were God's creatures. God will remember them for their
kindness. He will also remember Danny Lee Roscoe and what
a horrific thing he did and deal with him.

Vermont: Quinton Clayton, 21, accused of killing horse with bow, arrow free on bail

VERMONT -- A Granite City man accused of killing Bunny the horse with a stolen bow is now out on conditions of release after posting $10,000 bail.

Quinton Clayton, 21, is facing a felony count of unlawful mischief, a misdemeanor count of cruelty to animals resulting in a fatality and a misdemeanor count of petit larceny. If convicted, Clayton faces a maximum sentence of seven years in prison. He pleaded not guilty to the charges on Oct. 27.

After posting bail, a hearing was held in Washington County criminal court Friday in a packed courtroom where Clayton’s conditions of release were set, including that he be released to Sasha Pellerin and Victoria Stauff. Court records don’t indicate Pellerin or Stauff’s relationship with Clayton.

Bunny the horse with her family before she was killed

He was also ordered to obey a 24-hour curfew and can’t leave Washington County without permission from the court. Clayton has to report to the Barre City police department on Monday, Wednesday and Friday by 11 a.m.

He also can’t drink alcohol, can’t have any guns or dangerous weapons and can’t have or use a regulated drug without a valid prescription.

The drug condition was put in place because court records show on Sept. 29, nearly a week before Bunny died, Clayton was found unconscious on the railroad tracks between Cumberland Farms and Allen Lumber in Barre with a syringe sticking out of his arm. Police say he was found face down and was having trouble breathing.

Police say he was given Narcan, regained consciousness and admitted to using heroin.

According to the affidavit concerning the horse killing, written by Officer Nicholas J. Alden of the Barre City police, on Oct. 5 Clayton shot Bunny, a quarter horse valued at $7,000 and owned by Regan Howard, with a bow and arrows that he had stolen from a vehicle at the Highgate Apartments.

Alden said he received a report from a witness that Clayton and another man were on Prospect Street, where Bunny was shot, on the day of the incident, and they were going to “shoot a house or a horse.” He said he received a tip that the bow was at a residence on Granite Street.

Alden said he went to the residence and was given permission to search the rooms by a woman who lived there. He said he found the bow in a closet.

Alden said he received a report from a woman saying she had let Clayton use her cellphone and when she got it back he was still logged onto Facebook. The woman told Alden that she saw messages Clayton had sent to three other people and the horse was mentioned.

Screen shots of the messages were included in court records. In one of the messages, someone is talking to Clayton about the items stolen, including the bow, and how they can sell them. He’s also called a horse killer in the message.

News of Bunny’s death quickly made the rounds on social media. Howard, Bunny’s owner, had posted on Facebook that there was a reward for information leading to the arrest of whoever killed the horse.

In one of the Facebook messages, Clayton was sent a screen shot of the reward announcement and replied, “Yo don’t be telling anyone I did that.”

He was sent the announcement by someone else on Facebook and responded with, “Yo I know lol” and “haha buuuuuuny nooooooo lol.” [making fun of Bunny the horse that he shot and killed]

Pennsylvania: Drake Galloway, 21, accused of randomly shooting at and killing animals with his bow and arrow

Although the article about what Drake Galloway was alleged to have done is from 2014, the booking photo and details are from June 2016.

Name: Drake Edward Galloway
Gender: Male
Birthdate: 05/25/1995
Block: 300 Barton Hollow Rd
City: Waynesburg, Pennsylvania 15370
Arrest Age: 21
Arrest Date: 06/18/2016
Booking Location: Greene County, Pennsylvania
Arresting Agency: Pennsylvania State Police

PENNSYLVANIA -- State police have charged a Carmichaels man with killing a dog with a bow and arrow Oct. 12 in Franklin Township.

The dog’s owner, Jason Shriver, of 408 Whites Ridge, told police he was away from his residence and came home to find the family dog behind his garage with an arrow stuck in it.

Drake Edward Galloway, 19, of Route 21 Mobile Home Park, is charged with cruelty to animals and conspiracy to commit cruelty to animals.

Trooper Jason Clayton said Shriver’s front porch was covered in blood and tracks led to the back of the house where the dog was found.

The arrest came about when Trooper Jay Allen was called to the scene of an accident where a Jeep had crashed in a field. Allen told Clayton he saw a bow in the vehicle and provided Clayton with the names of the occupants.

On Oct. 13, Clayton located the Jeep parked along Barton Hollow Road, and the trooper spoke with Edward Wilkin, 23, who was a passenger in the Jeep when Galloway and an unidentified 17-year old allegedly took turns shooting out the window with a bow and arrow.

Wilkin told Clayton that Galloway and the teen used the bow and shot at random deer, cows, horses and a dog as they drove around. He said he thought he heard the juvenile passenger say he thought he hit a dog with one of the shots.

Galloway was interviewed by Clayton Oct. 19 and admitted to being the driver when the teen shot the dog. Galloway allegedly told Clayton the bow used to shoot the animal belonged to him.

He said he removed his Jeep without permission from the field on Whites Ridge Road with a tow truck from Wade’s Towing, where he was previously employed.

A preliminary hearing has not been scheduled.

NORTH CAROLINA -- Danny Roscoe, of Westfield, has been charged with three counts of felony cruelty to animals after an investigation into the death of three stray dogs who were found shot to death in the Pinnacle area on Monday, Feb 21.

Stokes County Sheriffs Office Det. J.M. Lemons said the dogs were reported to have been found on the 2400 block of Brims Grove Rd. in Pinnacle.

The issue first came to light in a Feb. 21 Facebook post by Bobby Clayton.

“Any one that lives in Pinnacle in the area of Brims Grove Road and Volunteer Road know there has been three dogs living in the curve near the river for a long time now,” he wrote.

“People in this area have been feeding them and even provided shelter for the dogs. I was on my way home today and seen a few cars parked at the creek.

"I stopped to feed the dogs and found out some one shot and killed them today. The people parked there were in the process of moving the dogs body’s to the side out of the way. All three dogs were killed in the parking area at the creek. This makes me very mad and makes me sick.”

Clayton said it appeared that the dogs had been shot in their stomachs with buckshot from a shotgun, noting that he had taken many pictures of the dead dogs.

Stokes County animal control officers and sheriff’s deputies began their investigation on Tuesday, Feb. 22, but Lemons said they were unable to locate the animals at the scene.

It's unknown who removed the animals but several animal advocates emailed FOX8 Tuesday saying the bodies should have been viewed by investigators as soon as possible before they could be removed or scene evidence tampered with.

I'm sure they thought 'Well it's just a dead dog' and didn't want to bother.

“During the investigation, detectives were able to develop a suspect in the shooting of the three dogs,” he said, noting that Roscoe was under a $7,500 unsecured bond.

Since the killings the community has created a makeshift memorial where families have stopped this week bringing balloons, flowers and stuffed animals.

What is an unsecured bond?
An unsecured bond or surety bond means you sign a document that says you will pay a certain amount of money if the defendant breaks his/her bond conditions, but there is no money or collateral required upfront.
