Pennsylvania: Drug dealer , 28, pleads guilty to animal cruelty after video of him beating, whipping and punching his pit bull, which cowered the entire time, goes viral

PENNSYLVANIA -- A York-area man caught on video repeatedly punching, whipping and hitting his pit bull Bugz pleaded guilty in York County Court Tuesday to animal cruelty.

"I had lost my temper," Luis Junior Cruz-Padro told presiding Common Pleas Judge Michael E. Bortner. "I tied him up and I struck him."

Cruz-Padro, 28, said he became angry when Bugz attacked his infant.

His defense attorney, David Ehrhard, said the baby wasn't hurt.

THIS IS ALL A LIE. WHERE'S THE BITE REPORT FROM ANIMAL CONTROL? WHERE ARE THE MEDICAL RECORDS FROM THE EMERGENCY ROOM?

"The dog was adjusting strangely at the time to a puppy that had just come into the house and to (the child)," he claimed. "He basically snapped in the child's face."

Cruz-Padro waived his right to a preliminary hearing and entered a guilty plea at the first opportunity, according to Erhard, "because he did it and he wants to take responsibility."

The attorney said he doesn't believe his client has any pets at this point.

"He feels miserable. People will not believe it, but he really did love that dog," Erhard said, adding Cruz-Padro is in therapy for anger-management issues.

The background: The 2½-minute video was shot Dec. 12 by one of the defendant's former neighbors on East South Street in York City.

The graphic, difficult-to-watch video went viral on social media Dec. 14, prompting dozens of people to alert the York County SPCA, executive director Melissa Smith has said. In it, Cruz-Padro ties Bugz to a pole and repeatedly hits, punches and whips the dog.

Smith has called the beating "deliberate, repeated and prolonged physical abuse."

When an SPCA official arrived at Cruz-Padro's city home that day, a mob of incensed animal lovers had formed and a private animal rescue had already taken custody of Bugz, Smith has said.

That rescue turned over Bugz to the SPCA, and Cruz-Padro's then-fiancee, now wife, also turned over an 8- to 10-week old pit bull pup that was sired by Bugz, according to Smith.

Bugz suffered a broken rib and bruising to his side from the beating, and he has fully recovered, Smith said. Both he and the puppy, now named Angel, have been adopted by loving families, Smith has said.

Sentencing: Judge Bortner set Cruz-Padro's sentencing for 1:30 p.m. May 31.

Bortner explained to the defendant that in an open plea, it's up to the judge to determine the appropriate punishment. Cruz-Padro pleaded guilty to first-degree misdemeanor animal cruelty.

"I don't know what the sentence will be myself," the judge said.

He ordered a pre-sentence investigation be completed to help him determine Cruz-Padro's punishment.

Erhard said state guidelines call for a sentence of anywhere between probation and six months in county prison. The attorney confirmed he intends to ask for a probationary sentence.

Threats, attack: Despite what Erhard called Cruz-Padro's genuine remorse and regret, people have neither forgotten nor forgiven him, the attorney said.

"He and his family have received a lot of threats," Erhard said, including death threats. "This whole incident has loomed over his family."

In the past several months, Cruz-Padro was physically attacked in his neighborhood by strangers who apparently recognized him, and he ended up with a chipped tooth, Erhard said. Cruz-Padro didn't go to police because every time his name gets in the newspaper, the threats resume, his attorney said.

I don't believe one word of that nonsense.

Erhard said his client simply wants to receive his punishment and put the incident behind him.

"He's very ashamed of it," Erhard said of the video, and "short of jumping off the courthouse roof" there's nothing else Cruz-Padro can do to atone for his actions.

OH SO HE'S "VERY ASHAMED" IS HE? IS HE ASHAMED OF PREVIOUS ARREST, DAVID ERHARD? HE'S A DRUG DEALER!

On 03.28.2012 at 1852 hours a Northern York County Regional Police Officer stopped a black Honda Civic on Piedmont Drive after observing pass through a portion of the roadway that is posted “Do Not Enter — Emergency Vehicles Only”.

Canada: Michael Hackenberger Charged With Animal Cruelty After Undercover Video Surfaced of Him Brutally Whipping Cowering Tiger

CANADA -- Life Of Pi tiger trainer abuser Michael Hackenberger has resigned after being charged with five counts of animal cruelty by the Ontario SPCA.

The allegations first arose in December of 2015 after PETA posted an undercover video online showing the Bowmanville Zoo owner beating a young tiger 19 times.

Hackenberger supplied the tiger for the hit 2012 film The Life of Pi and also trained animals for James Franco's The Interview. The Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has legal authority in animal welfare cases and filed the charges after spending "significant time reviewing the facility and interviewing all involved.”

Hackenberger was found to have struck the male Siberian tiger, Uno, in the face and elsewhere on the body with a whip. This incident caused the animal distress as he pushed his thumb into the animal's eye.

Note: This video is nauseating. I only got 20 seconds into the 1-1/2 minute video and I had to stop it. It's horrible. This poor tiger rolls over onto its belly in a submissive position and you just hear that whip cracking over and over as it's slashing onto the tiger.

Hackenberger then comments that if someone had videotaped what he'd just done, "PETA would burn this place to the ground".

The abuse of this beautiful tiger is disgusting. The same should be done to Hackenberger.

The Life of Pi film was first in the spotlight after its release as questions arose over the treatment of the animal used to play Richard Parker, the Bengal tiger stranded on a life raft with the main character in the film, Pi Patel.

At the time of its release, The Hollywood Reporter investigated the film and was shown emails in which an American Humane Association claimed that the tiger nearly drowned during the shooting of scenes within a giant water tank.

Director Ang Lee was said to consider these incidents “accidents”.

James Sharper faces animal cruelty charge after video of horse whipping

FLORIDA -- An Okeechobee man was arrested Friday and faces animal cruelty charges after a video surfaced of a horse whipping.

Authorities with the Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office said they only found the video, because the suspect, James Sharper, told them about it.

Deputies said the video showed a man whipping a horse at Prairie Trail Riders. They said they've identified the man in the video as Sharpe, the owner of Prairie Trail Riders.

Deputies said Sharpe called them to tell them about the video, saying they shouldn't believe other people who claimed the man in the video was him.

Investigators said once they closely watched at the video, it was obvious Sharpe was the man who was seen whipping the horse.

Sharpe was arrested and charged with 11 counts of animal cruelty, eight of the charges are felonies.

Deputies said Sharpe had 11 horses at the farm, and all of them were malnourished.

Animal Care and Control took custody of the horses.

New Mexico: Chaves Co. dairy workers charged after undercover cow abuse video

NEW MEXICO -- Four dairy workers have been charged with animal cruelty in connection to an animal activist group's undercover video showing the abuse of cows  at Winchester Dairy in Chaves County last fall.

According to court documents, Cesar Morales-Iniguez and Stephen Toublefield are each facing three counts, Luis Urbie Lira is facing two counts and Jesus Espinoza is charged with one count of animal cruelty.

"Mercy for Animals," the group behind the video, says an undercover investigator filmed workers punching, kicking, whipping and even shocking cows' genitals. The group also filmed workers dragging cows with tractors.

Mercy for Animals said the Winchester Dairy cows were denied veterinary care.

The dairy fired all employees and identified the alleged offenders in the video to law enforcement, according to the Associated Press.

Winchester Dairy produces milk for Leprino Foods, the world's largest producer of mozzarella cheese and a supplier to major pizza chains like Pizza Hut and Domino's.

Last Monday, Leprino Foods announced a new animal welfare policy for its dairy suppliers.

By Dec. 31, 2016, all suppliers must keep a safe and sanitary environment, provide pain relief during disbudding/dehorning and give appropriate veterinary care to animals.
