Arizona: Two Huskies get loose, go on rampage in neighborhood attacking and killing every pet they can catch. Animal Control hands them back to their owner

ARIZONA -- Two Siberian Huskies who attacked three dogs and a cat Monday morning, killing three of them, were released to their owner overnight until town attorneys were sure they had standing to seize them.

Sahuarita Animal Control Officer Andrew Vargas seized the dogs around 2 p.m. Tuesday after he was given the OK, Sahuarita Police Lt. Sam Almodova said.

Sahuarita police received a call about 9:40 a.m. Monday about two Siberian Huskies running wild and jumping into backyards in the 14000 block of Camino El Foso in central Rancho Sahuarita, Almodova said.

“Once the officers and animal control officer got in the area, a resident flagged them down and said the dogs were in his backyard,” Almodova said. “The dogs were friendly toward our animal control officer and they were able to be captured.”

This means they're extremely animal aggressive with an inherent prey drive that cannot be 'fixed'. There are many dogs, including Pit Bulls, that don't necessarily select humans to attack but if they get in the way of them trying to kill another animal, that human will also be attacked. Their desire to attack and kill overrides anything any owner can do - except never let it around other animals. Most owners are too lazy to ensure the safety of others. 

A short time later, Almodova said police received another call indicating two poodles and a cat had been attacked and killed earlier. 

Officers determined the Huskies were responsible for jumping into other people's fenced yards, chasing, attacking and killing the animals.

Demetrius Kavathas, 30, was cited on two counts each of Prohibited Acts for the bites, vaccinations required, license required and dogs at large, police said.

The dogs were taken to the Humane Society of Southern Arizona on Monday then released to an owner before the end of the day, Almodova said.

When property is seized, the town wants to ensure they are on solid legal footing, so the decision was made to allow the Huskies’ owner to retrieve the dogs while attorneys reviewed the case, Almodova said.

“This was the first incident we’ve had in town (under new policies) and it’s taken a while to make sure no one’s rights were being violated and that we’ve done everything correctly,” Almodova said Tuesday afternoon.

Babies and Huskies do NOT mix

Sahuarita signed a three-year contract with the Humane Society of Southern Arizona last year to shelter animals, and hired Vargas as the town’s first animal control officer. It severed ties with Pima County last May, citing soaring costs.

A hearing to determine the dogs’ fate will be held before the town magistrate in coming days, Almodova said. The owner can pay a bond of $500 for each dog to retrieve them before that.

On Monday, Kavathas had to have the dogs vaccinated and licensed to keep them, the lieutenant said.

A woman who answered the door at the Kavathas home declined to speak with a reporter Tuesday morning.

Likely, the "woman who answered the door" is Adrianna Kavathas, wife and co-owner of the killer dogs.

Hearing screams

Nadia Pischanski was sound asleep when she was awakened by her mother’s screams on Monday.

She discovered two Siberian Huskies in her backyard on Camino El Foso. The dogs were on either side of her dog, Tigre, tugging on the Chow/Husky mix’s ears, she said.

Pischanski grabbed a broom and joined her mom in screaming at the dogs. The dogs would retreat for a few seconds only to return to harass Tigre, who is 14.

“We kept protecting our dog,” Pischanski said. “We’d take turns yelling at them. My mom protected him while I called 911.”

Eventually, the dogs wandered out of her view, she said. She soon overheard a neighbor speaking to police. After several minutes, she flagged down the officers as they were leaving to tell them her dog had been injured. Tigre had a puncture wound on his head.

On Tuesday morning, Pischanski said Tigre appeared exhausted from the ordeal.

“He can barely walk,” she said.

While speaking with the officers, Pischanski said she learned the Huskies are suspected of killing the poodles and a cat.

“When I went to bed (Monday night) I could hear horrible noises, but I thought my dog had killed a bird,” she said. “I didn’t go out because I didn’t want to see that.”

UNITED KINGDOM -- A mom has shared horrific pictures of bloody dog bite marks on her daughter's face, as the pet responsible is still being walked daily past her family home.

Kerry Garforth’s seven-year-old Mia was attacked in June last year and she has decided to speak out as the owner is still exercising the husky around their West Yorkshire village.

Kerry, 33, said: “I want to make everyone aware of a dog that gets walked round Roberttown/Norristhorpe, it’s a Husky and is walked by a man in his mid-30s. This dog bit my daughter in the face for which she needed nine stitches.”

The mum-of-two said she asked an old school friend to look after Mia while she went for a hospital appointment and went back to pick up her daughter.

Kerry said: “I was sitting on the sofa chatting to my friend and Mia was with her son having some tea. Suddenly I heard Mia screaming. The dog had bitten her after trying to take some food from her plate. She was stood there shaking.

“We took her to Dewsbury Hospital but she was transferred to Pinderfields where she had about eight to nine injections and the wounds cleaned out with salt water.

“My daughter’s father reported it to the police but when they came to see me about three to four days later I must admit I down-played it as she and her partner were friends and I didn’t want to get them into trouble.”

However her friendship with her old friend has since disintegrated and she says she feels guilty about not protecting her daughter better.

She says on Facebook: “He continues to walk past my house with the dog which is not only very upsetting for my daughter but I have to live with the guilt of what that dog did because I was at their house when it bit her.

“The dog should never have been left alone with the children and I have to live with it, I think it’s very unfair I’m getting reminded by seeing the dog myself and seeing my daughter upset.

"Yes, it’s a public road but there’s absolutely no need for him to walk past my house.

“Roberttown is a village full of children and I just want to warn anyone that has children playing out to be cautious.

“I’m not saying the dog will do anything but considering the circumstances I’m now making it known to you all.”

She said her daughter, who has since recovered, is now anxious around dogs and added the attack left her stressed about Mia.

1/22/18 - Per call the Deming Animal Shelter, they can't do anything about the dog who attacked Roan until he is brought in 3-4 times. The person I spoke to said that dogs fighting is normal behavior. IT IS NOT!

Texas: Five dogs which attacked a killed Erin McCleskey have been ordered to be euthanized

TEXAS -- A Travis County jury has decided the fate of five dogs who brutally attacked and killed a woman in 2016.

Tuesday, the jury deliberated and came to the decision that all six dogs did indeed contribute to the death of Erin Mccleskey and have been ordered to be euthanized (with the exception of the sixth dog, which had already died a few months back).

  

 

The owner of the dogs will have 30 days to decide if he will appeal the verdict before county can in fact put the dogs down.

Earlier Tuesday,  the owner of the dogs and an expert on dog attacks gave emotional and conflicting testimony in court.

The owner of the dogs, Terry Swanson, testified Tuesday that he believes only one dog attacked and killed Erin Mcccleskey last year.

 

 

Swanson and his attorney Eric Torberson, Tuesday, CLAIMED to the jury that a Labrador mix was responsible because she was protecting her litter of puppies.

To address the single dog theory, prosecutors brought in James Crosby, an expert in dog attacks.

“I find the maternal instinct to have been very unlikely because the puppies are older, they were in the round pen.  There’s no evidence that Ms. McCleskey was in the puppy pen or interacting with the puppies at all,” said Crosby.

There were six dogs on the property when Mccleskey went to the house on Fay Road to serve legal papers.

Travis County deputy medical examiner Kendall Crowns testified that he found 455 puncture wounds on McCleskey's body. He told the jury that a [fatal] attack by one dog will typically leave about 150 marks. 

Both Crowns and Crosby concluded that its highly unlikely Mccleskey was chased down and mauled by only one dog.

“My opinion based on the evidence is that all of the dog’s present participated to one level or another in the bites and the attack to Ms. McCleskey that led to her death,” said Crosby.

Gonzalo Grimaldo, the owner of a parking lot next to the Swansons’ property, said the dogs got loose a few months ago and attacked his dog. He called the attack frightening and said he called 911, but said nobody responded to his report.

Another neighbor, Christi Sparks, said her family has had constant problems with dogs running loose in the neighborhood since they moved there in 2005.

Since the attack in Manor, the dogs have been locked away at the animal shelter. Legal maneuvering has prevented authorities from putting them all down.

Ending their lives, according to Crosby is the reasonable decision. Even if there is no way for the jury to know if one or more dogs did not take part in the attack.

 

 

“We can’t be sure that those dogs will or will not severely injure another person and I’m not willing to take the chance,” said Crosby.

A vet from the shelter, Dr. Rachael Hays, testified that since the animals arrived at the facility none of the dogs have shown aggression.

Most dogs won't once they've been removed from their property and are in a new environment with unfamiliar smells, people, dogs, etc. Their demeanor changes to more of a timid, cautious state rather than overt aggression.

The jury started deliberations shortly before 4:00 p.m.

Texas: Hearing underway to determine if dogs that killed Erin McCleskey will be euthanized

TEXAS -- A Travis County jury will decide the fate of six dogs ordered to be put down after a brutal attack that killed a woman in 2016.

A trial to appeal that order began Monday afternoon at the Travis County courthouse.

Process server Erin McCleskey attempted to serve a citation to a homeowner in Northeast Travis County in June of 2016, but, before she left the property, she was mauled to death by a group of dogs on the property.

 

There is no question in anyone's mind that McCleskey died because she was attacked by dogs at a home on Fay Street in Manor. What is being debated in court is whether all six dogs on the property should be euthanized.

The dogs were taken after McCleskey's body was found in the yard. One week later, Justice of the Peace Herb Evans ordered the dogs to be put down.
             
Attorney Eric Torberson, who is representing the dog's owner, appealed that decision.

             

Monday, ERIC TORBERSON told the jury that putting down all six dogs is wrong because it is unclear which dogs actually participated in the attack.

ERIC TORBERSON also argued one of the dogs recently had puppies and was likely being protective of her young, spurring a violent response.

             
The mother dog since died while undergoing a medical procedure.

The State said the four Labrador-Pyrenees mixes and two Husky-Australian Cattle Dog mixes attacked as a pack, puncturing McCleskey's skin more than 455 times.
             

 

 

 

During the hearing, officers with the Travis County Sheriff’s Office testified that while processing the scene, they noticed aggressive behavior in at least three of the dogs.

An animal control officer said the canines had very little human interaction and it is likely they all played at least a minor role in the attack against McCleskey.

The night she died, McCleskey entered the property to serve a citation. She walked through a gate, past a no trespassing sign to do so. That’s another reason the defense claimed the dogs were being protective.

Would a girl selling Girl Scout cookies ignore a "No Trespassing" sign in order to get to the front door to sell cookies? Would Jehovah's Witnesses ignore it to get to the front door to ring the doorbell? Was the sign even visible or was it in an obscure place, hidden by leaves?

OK - Time to go public regarding the attack on my dog yesterday.

At approximately 3.30pm on Monday 20th November outside of the Monastery on Berry Drive, Paignton, my dog was attacked by a black Staffordshire [Pit Bull] Terrier, it was shocking and unnecessary!

I was walking my 12 year old Siberian Husky and was just passing The Anode when I saw a couple walking up Monastery Road when this dog suddenly ran towards us as it was off lead, mine was on a lead, so she sat next to me. The male owner shouted at me "pick your dog up" my response was "I can't" because she was too big to do so for starters.

Before I knew it, the Staffie had its teeth around my dogs neck and she was screaming in pain. The dog only stopped once the male owner caught up with us and pulled it off.

I did say straight away "Why is your dog not on a f**king lead?" his answer was "because my dog won't do a poo whilst on the lead" and the girl responded with "I must get a muzzle as he has done it before!"

They were both told it wasn't an excuse, to find a safe place to let their dog off the lead and to put a muzzle on it as well as get some training! I turned to look at the dog who seemed to have a tuft of fur and skin in its mouth. The bloke continued being unhelpful and say it was because he was new to the area. He was aggressive in his verbal manner, the girl calmed him down and gave me her mobile number, said her dog was insured and would cover the vet bill.

She seemed very kind and checked my dogs face and said it only looks like a cut on the gum and isn't she cute, she's a husky isn't she and I used to own a malamute. There was blood everywhere, all over me and my dog. The whole time, my dog did not retaliate. Only when I turned to go home did the bloke apologize. At no point did I see a lead put on that dog.

Once home, I was in shock cleaning up her bloodied face and as I wasn't convinced it was a small cut, a neighbor drove me down to the vets to check her out. She had a tooth hole in the corner of her mouth, a gash down the gum and a chunk of skin missing from the side of her chin. She would need a stitch or two but it could wait until the morning. She was given an antibiotic shot and needed her pain meds topped up overnight as she is an old girl with arthritis and cruciate ligament issues.

On returning home, we took photographs of her face and sent them to the mobile number I was given and explained the situation regarding the vets .... no answer. I also informed the police of the attack as it could have been a lot worse, and what made me more upset is that it didn't have to happen as they knew their dog did this!

In the evening, my husband text her from his mobile ... no answer ... we have been nothing but polite.

My husband picked up our girl from the vets this afternoon to be told that the gash under her chin was very deep and they had to cut away some of the muscle to stop it getting infected. She is now on more antibiotics and we have a vet bill of £350.

My husband phoned her today .... no answer. We have had no response what so ever, there's an out of control dog in Paignton who could hurt another dog or even a human if they got in the way, and two adults refusing to step up and be responsible for their dog and the damage to my old girl.

SHE JUST HAD TO RUIN IT BY BEING AN APOLOGIST

So, if you recognize these people - stay away for your own safety. It's not the dogs fault, it's the owners! I am a canine behaviorist and I have no issues with Staffies, and never will as I pet sit one who is great because he has manners.

I would ask Fay to explain why so many pets are mauled to death by Pit Bulls. Why are so many children mauled and disfigured by bully breeds? Why are so many livestock animal mauled and killed by bully breeds? Why are so many owners shocked when their Pit Bull, that they raised in the household with love, suddenly "snapped" and tried to kill them and/or their children?

It has nothing to do with how they're raised and everything to do with the inherent traits that have been bred into these dogs for hundreds of years.

Meanwhile... someone did as she requested and re-posted/shared in an effort to track down the Pit Bull owner. It was posted on the Facebook group page The Deplorables, which specifically tells readers "This is a free speech, free-fire zone: If you are looking for a safe space, put a safety pin on your shirt and go to your local [university, college]". 

Brad and Greg don't seem to understand the concept of "free speech, free-fire zone". Of course, this is typical of apologists. They don't want to hear the truth.
