Oregon: Little boy still recovering after he was attacked by a Pit Bull

OREGON -- Watching 2-1/2 year-old Jeremiah Frohlich laugh and play at Medford’s Bear Creek Park on a cold afternoon this week, you wouldn’t know the boy was nearly killed by a pit bull just days after Christmas.

Recently freed from an arm cast and a cumbersome neck brace, the brown-haired toddler was more focused on his tiny trucks and toy dragons than bothered by a stuffy gauze bandage protecting his damaged scalp or his mom’s insistence that he wear a warmer jacket.

Fighting to recover from devastating injuries, the toddler was oblivious to the changes his family has endured during his recovery for the past two months as he played with other children at the park’s playground.

Laughing as her boy raced a tiny car, his mother, Serena Neve, couldn’t help but worry both for her son and her family.

Jeremiah was playing outside with two older siblings when a neighbor’s dog broke free from a dog run and lunged at the boy at his family’s former home in Williams.

Their original YouCaring fundraising page said "The owners of the dog are also the owners of the home where they live, so a once challenging situation is now urgent."

His older sister fought off the vicious dog, which was later euthanized, but Jeremiah had essentially been scalped and sustained extensive injuries elsewhere on his body.

The family had already been financially strapped prior to the attack because Neve, who worked as a drug treatment counselor, was on maternity leave after having a daughter who is now 6 months old.

Working odd jobs to generate extra income, Neve got a phone call saying her son was being airlifted to Doernbecher’s Childrens Hospital in Portland.

After more than 16 hours of surgery to piece the toddler’s scalp back together, followed by a nearly month-long stay in the hospital, the family returned to the Rogue Valley but still faces week-long stays in Portland every month for tests and procedures.

Jeremiah faces more surgery to move the skin on his scalp in hopes he’ll have a normal appearance and hair on his head.

Unable to return to the home where the boy was attacked, the family of seven is currently split up, some staying with friends in Grants Pass and Glendale, some renting hotel rooms in Central Point.

Neve says she is even considering camping in a yurt while juggling school and work schedules.

“We’re staying in hotels, which is definitely not cheap. It costs more than rent, so we try to stay with friends when we can,” Neve said.

“My husband works in Grants Pass, and that’s where the kids go to school. I’ve been applying for places to rent, but when property management places find out you have a lot of kids, they don’t approve you. They can’t say that’s the reason, but it’s obvious when that’s why. I’m even signing for a few nights in a yurt for $40 because it’s at least better than $60 for one night.”

Well, property management companies typically won't rent a 1-bedroom or 2-bedroom to someone with 5 kids, but there shouldn't be a problem with a 3-bedroom. Assuming you have 2 sets of bunk beds in 2 of the bedrooms and the baby is in the master bedroom with the parents. It's do-able. After all, remember The Brady Bunch? Three kids in each bedroom.

These are affordable rentals available now

While her husband has a good-paying job, living in hotels and other accommodations, she notes, costs more than rent and complicates cooking healthful meals and providing a calm environment for Jeremiah to continue to heal.

Likely, this little boy's medical bills are covered by either Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Also, the Shriners are known for assisting families with sick, injured children. I'm sure they can help with the week-long stays in Portland that they must do monthly.

What her family has been going through is horrible, but she needs to get a job and they need to use whatever money is left that has been donated to them for a down payment on a rental home. Now. Before it all gets frittered away.

Also, what about the owners of the Pit Bull? Why aren't they paying for anything? This family was living with them when their dog tried to kill this little boy.

Focused on caring for Jeremiah and getting her family into permanent housing, Neve is unsure when she’ll be able to return to work.

“It’s been a nightmare, and so many things have happened that I haven’t really had a chance to slow down and realize all that our family has really been through,” she said.

“He had to have a blood transfusion. He had a broken arm. The tendons in his neck were stretched twice the length they’re supposed to be. He was wearing a neck brace until recently. His doctors thought he would need surgery on his vertebrae, but we got a second opinion. It’s really hard to know that people will be able to look at him and wonder what happened to him.

“The hardest part is that after all he’s been through, our family has lost our home,” she said. “It’s been a really trying time.”

Donations to the family have been set aside to cover travel expenses to take Jeremiah to Portland for treatment and to help with deposits for a place to live. She also plans to start collecting hats for her tiny boy.

“They can’t do surgery until he’s finished growing, so he’s going to be wearing a lot of hats,” she said. “I don’t want him to have to go through everyone focusing on, ‘Hey, what happened to you?’ I want him to lead a normal life.”

Smiling as Jeremiah pushed a red truck across a wood plank at the playground, Neve said the ordeal has given her perspective and an appreciation for each day with her son.

“He’s a little bit skittish around dogs, which is to be expected, but he’s a happy boy and he just wants to play and be a regular kid,” she said. “Right now the plan is just to find a place to live and be able to provide the care that he’s going to need.”

“Our family is really grateful for all the people who have reached out to our family and for all the prayers — they’ve been really important to us.”

To donate a hat for Jeremiah, send it to 106 NW F St., P.O. Box 446, Grants Pass, OR, 97526.

Michigan: Prosecutor speechless after jurors declare owner of Pit Bull that nearly killed little girl NOT GUILTY

MICHIGAN -- Nearly a year after a 2-year-old Cass County girl was mauled by a pit bull, a six-person jury found the first suspect in the case not guilty; but he pleaded guilty for other charges.

“I’ll be very frank: I’ve done this for 35 years, and we’ll certainly respect the process and so forth, but this is the most befuddling decision that I’ve seen in 35 years from a jury,” said Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz.

His strong words came Thursday afternoon after a jury of four women and two men found Justin Smith not guilty of four counts.

Smith owned a pit bull named Kryptonite, who became the center of an awful dog attack that left a little girl with life-changing injuries.

Arial Harrison, then 2-years-old, and her brother Anthony were attacked by a neighbor’s pit bull while playing in a backyard in April 2017.

Days after the attack, Kryptonite was euthanized.

Arial received the worst injuries – losing both of her ears and most of her scalp.

Smith was charged with eleven 90-day misdemeanors after the attack.

He pleaded guilty to seven of them at the start of his trial: five counts of his dog running at large; one count of failure to vaccinate his dog; and one count for failing to have a dog license.

But the six-person jury found Smith not guilty of the remaining four charges: three counts of dog bite; and one count of interfering with enforcement.

Smith is set to be sentenced on February 26. But that will not be the end of this story.

Vashaun Morgan will stand trial on February 27 for his involvement in the case.

He faces 17 charges, all similar to Smith’s.

ABC57 reached out to Arial’s father on Thursday after the trial, but have not heard back.

Oregon: Two-year-old boy attacked by pit bull, undergoes 16-hour surgery to repair scalp which was ripped off

OREGON -- A 2-year-old boy underwent an hours-long surgery this week in Portland after he was brutally injured by a pit bull.

Jeremiah Frohlich was attacked by the dog near his Medford home. He suffered a broken arm, and his scalp was torn off. He was rushed by a medical helicopter to Portland, where he underwent a 16-hour-long surgery to repair his scalp.

"Our biggest concern is, when we come home, we want to make sure that Jeremiah is being well cared for. We cannot go back to where we were staying where he was attacked by the dog. It's not a good environment," his mother said.

The family wants him to recover in Medford.

Two-year-old Jeremiah was medi-flighted to Portland for a 16 hr surgery to piece his scalp back together after a dog attack. The doctors prepared his mother, Serena, for a difficult surgery: skin grafting and moving a vein from his leg to his head, but miraculously, his scalp fit together "like a puzzle".

He was sedated for several days to give his body the best chance at healing and things seem to be going well so far, but now they fear a neck injury and he is showing signs of illness.

This family is no stranger to crisis. After the death of her mother, the family moved here with the promise of a great job and a fresh start, but that is the opposite of their experience for the last two years.

Like so many others, this family of 7 has been unable to find housing, moving from a tent to a single room to a garage, all in outlying areas making it difficult with one car. The transmission went out in their only vehicle, so the family has been stranded in Williams with no way to shop for food and other necessities.

To make matters worse, the owners of the dog are also the owners of the home where they live, so a once challenging situation is now urgent.

She worked in a local drug rehab counseling center until the birth of their 7 month old baby. As a skilled laborer, the father, Scott, has work waiting for him if he can find reliable transportation. She is also ready and willing to return to work if and when she could get herself there and her children to childcare.

Both parents are hungry for God, relationships, stability and want nothing more than to contributing members of our community, but instead they find themselves at our mercy.

Please join me in lifting this family up, help them get a firm foundation under their feet and see them soar.

Goal #1 was to get them some food, diapers and clothing. Done. Thank you!

Goal #2 reliable transportation so these loving parents can work and provide for their children

Goal #3 a stable safe home for this family to put roots down and thrive

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, PLEASE PLEASE KEEP  BABY JEREMIAH IN YOUR PRAYERS - HE AND HIS MOTHER REMAIN AT DOERNBECKER'S CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL IN PORTLAND

Update  posted on January 9, 2018
Good news coming from Portland.  Jeremiah is making progress and his dad and siblings were finally able to arrive to see him and give mom some much needed rest.

They all are currently staying at the Ronald McDonald House, but this stay will come to an end on Tuesday, January 10.  Jeremiah’s current physical needs are being met at the hospital, but the family is homeless. They have a couple options they are looking into for their remaining stay in Portland.  At this time, Jeremiah is scheduled for release on January 29.

Their situation at that time will be dire.  They are homeless and will have no place to go.

This family’s biggest need and priority at this time is housing.

As you recall, they were living in a shop with no heat or facilities.  They were able to use the restroom and kitchen in the house at the property they were staying.

The owners of this property are also the owners of the dog that got loose and attacked Jeremiah.  The family cannot return to this situation, and even if they could, it is not a safe, healthy environment for Jeremiah or the rest of the family.

They need a home.  They need a place where the family can be together when Jeremiah leaves the hospital.  Can you help?  Do you have a rental, a room or two that this family could stay in temporarily until Jeremiah is stable and dad is able to return to work? Serena is reaching out to organizations as well as the hospital advocates. She will be contacting local agencies and looking at all options available to help.

Please continue donating. This money will be used to pay for stable housing which this family desperately needs to be able to meet Jeremiah’s needs when he’s released.

Spain: "It was horrible, there was bone mass exposed" - Seventy-six-year old woman attacked by her own Pit Bull

SPAIN -- A 76-YEAR-OLD woman has been left seriously injured after her own American pit bull terrier attacked her in the Galicia region in northern Spain.

The victim is the second woman to be attacked by dangerous dogs since the weekend.

The attack happened in the neighborhood of Sequeiros, Mos when the dog, that was loose from its chain, became aggressive with road contractors working nearby.

When the woman heard the commotion she stepped in with a broom. But the dog lunged at her, knocked her to the ground and started to bite her arms and legs.

One of the roadworkers said, "The lady was completely torn" before they managed to scare the dog away by restarting one of their machines.

The head of the Local Police in Mos, Gerardo Álvarez, who lives nearby drew his gun in case he was forced to shoot the animal.

But the son of the woman managed to calm the dog and chain it until the Guardia Civil arrived and took the animal away to a shelter in Meis.

The mayor of Mos, Nidia Arévalo, who was in the area along with other councillors to oversee the works, saw the woman lying on the floor.

"It was horrible, there was bone mass exposed."

The attack comes just  days after another elderly woman had both legs amputated after a vicious dog attack in northern Spain.

The 82-year-old from Covelo, Pontevedra, named as Maria Dolores AB, was set upon by two French Mastiffs owned by a neighbor as she returned home from Mass.

Horrified witnesses described how the animals bit her lower legs and scalp to the bone before being pulled away.

BREED SPECIFIC LAWS (BSL) IN SPAIN:

Ownership of Potentially Dangerous Dogs in Spain

Spanish law requires that the owners of potentially dangerous dogs obtain a license for that animal. Potentially dangerous dogs are:

  • Pit Bull Terrier
  • Staffordshire Bull Terrier
  • American Staffordshire Terrier
  • Rottweiler
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Fila Brasileiro
  • Tosa Inu
  • Akita Inu
For any large dog weighing more than 44 pounds with a square head, strong jaws, and a strong muscular back, you must obtain the license or your animal will be impounded.

Licensing
In order to obtain a license, the owner must apply with the appropriate Spanish municipal office. To be eligible for a license, applicants must:
  • Be 18 years old
  • Have no criminal history
  • Pass a physical and psychological exam
  • Pay an application fee (currently 34 Euros)
  • Obtain civil liability insurance in the amount of $120,000/203,000
If your application is approved and you received a license, there will be specific security measures that the owner of these dogs must take:
  • You must carry your license with you if you are with your dog in public
  • Your dog must be on a fixed leash no longer than 6.5 feet in public
  • The dog must have a muzzle affixed to its mouth such that it cannot bite
  • The owner can only be walking one such dog at a time
  • A dog left outdoors, such as in a yard, must be secured such that they cannot escape into the public

Spain: Woman has both legs amputated after vicious attack by two French Mastiffs

SPAIN -- A WOMAN is fighting for her life after being attacked by dogs in Galicia.

The 82-year-old from Covelo, Pontevedra, named as Maria Dolores AB, was set upon by two French mastiffs owned by a neighbour as she returned home from mass.

Horrified witnesses described how the animals bit her lower legs and scalp to the bone before being pulled away.

She was reportedly dragged for 30 metres (~90 feet) and her injuries were so serious that surgeons were forced to amputate both her legs below the knees.

According to local media reports, the dogs had escaped from the garden of their owner’s home, with police now probing the incident.

The victim was taken to the Alvaro Cunqueiro de Vigo Hospital where she remains in a critical condition.

The town mayor, Juan Pablo Castillo, said: “It is a tragedy that has affected us all,” before confirming that there had been no issues with the animals reported prior to the attack.

While one of the dogs is a pure French mastiff, also known as Dogue de Bordeaux, the other is a boxer cross, and the incident has raised questions over whether they should be considered potentially dangerous or not.

While the mastiff appears on the Galician dangerous dogs list, neither it nor the boxer are included on the national version.

Under Spanish law owners of dog breeds considered potentially dangerous, including rottweilers, pit bull terriers, and Staffordshire bull terriers must possess a mandatory licence and keep the animals muzzled and on a lead whenever in public.

Indiana: Three-year-old boy hospitalized with 200 stitches, nerve damage after being attacked by relative's Pit Bull, which had history of attacking

INDIANA --  A 3-year-old boy is in the hospital recovering after being attacked by a relative's Pit Bull.

The attack happened Sunday at a home on the east side of Indianapolis.

Elias Hearn, 3, underwent surgery on Thursday for injures to his neck and face. According to Elias’ mother, Stephanie Schofield, the injuries required more than 200 stitches. She said her son has nerve damage, can’t eat or drink, and has lost mobility on the right side of his face.

His mother said he will likely need additional surgeries.

It’s still unclear exactly how the dog attack happened, but according to an Indianapolis Animal Care and Control spokesperson, the child was at a family gathering and playing outside when the dog attacked him and wouldn’t let go.

He said several people worked to pull the Pit Bull away before police arrived. The 3-year-old was rushed to the hospital.

“It is kind of indescribable. It’s like a nightmare you just can’t wake up from and get the images out of your head, and you have to keep praying that your son can find some relief and that he is going to heal properly, and we can limit the amount of surgeries he is going to have,” said Schofield.

An Indianapolis Animal Care Services spokesperson said the Pit Bull was voluntarily surrendered by its owner and put down. He tells us the female owner was somehow related to the child. No citations were issued in this case.

The boy’s mom said she wanted to share her story because she doesn’t want anyone else to have to go through what her family is dealing with.

Schofield said she has two other children, and friends and family have stepped up to help.

A GoFundMe account has been created to help with expenses because she said she can’t work anymore and is spending her time at the hospital.

*update* he was not able to move his mouth or tongue still so a feeding tube was placed. Everyone knows my baby just loves his food and snacks and he saw a chocolate milk on the desk and is so frustrated he can't have anything which is breaking my heart because he can't even open his mouth to cry. He is making progress though so thank you for all of the prayers and please continue to.

Please anyone who owns a dog especially a pit bull, make sure you are a responsible pet owner and if the dog has a history of attacking which this dog had, it's obviously not a good ideal to let him outside without a fenced in yard where children are playing regardless if you see them or not but are well aware they are there. I do not believe all pit bulls are horrible, our dog actually is a pit boxer mix, it's the owner that needs to ensure they are capable of taking care of the type of breed they decide to keep

They just took the bandages off and he will most likely need additional surgeries. All we can do is pray for a miracle at this point. This is the worst thing a parent can feel to see their child in so much pain and unable to do anything to take it away. We need prayers please share 😭

*Baby Elias Update* he is resting and has been out of surgery, it just took me a minute to regain my composure to post an update but surgery went well, they had to remove pretty much the entire area that looked black in the previous pictures because it was dead tissue so now it is all taken out but an open wound we will need to let heal on its own so he can grow his own skin back hopefully. If it does not progress as expected he will need a skin graph so praying he can heal on his own. We already know he will need several more surgeries to gain back the mobility on his right side possibly a nerve replacement they will take from another area like his calf and several more once his wounds heal for the scar revision process. Please just keep us in your prayers

South Africa: Fundraiser created for little girl after "part of her skull was ripped off" by a Pit Bull and a Rottweiler

SOUTH AFRICA -- More than $5,000 has already been raised for a girl and her grandfather who were mauled by a pit bull and a Rottweiler.

The crowdfunding effort, called “Sunshine & Superhero Fund for Emma”, was created on the website www.backabuddy.co.za.

A target of R250 000 has been set to assist Emma Murphy, three, and oupa (grandfather) Aubrey Murphy, 56, who were attacked at their Athlone home after the dogs jumped over a two metre-high fence (~ six feet tall). It has since been revealed the dogs could also have entered their yard through a gap in the fence.

Mense have so far donated R67 825.38 (about $5,200 US).

Emma is at Red Cross Children’s Hospital after part of her skull was ripped off and she has had to undergo surgery.

Aubrey is at Vincent Pallotti Hospital and is said to be recovering well after sustaining injuries to his head and arm.

The incident happened last Tuesday while Aubrey and the twins, Emma and Kate, were at their home in Garlandale Crescent, Athlone.

Aubrey had heard a commotion in the yard and went to investigate and it is believed Emma followed while Kate stood at the back door when the dogs attacked.

The dogs and two others have since been removed by the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.

The crowdfund was started by Paula Pinkham, who explained that all funds raised would go towards medical costs.

Emma’s other grandfather, Cliff Augustyn, confirmed the family was aware of the fundraiser.

Sunshine & Superhero Fund for Emma

Little fighter, Emma Murphy and her incredibly courageous grandfather, Aubrey, were mauled by dogs in a freak and savage incident at their home last week. With severe injuries to her little body and a very long road to full recovery, we are embarking on this campaign to ease some of the financial pressure off Emma`s dedicated yet distraught parents.

Emma is a twin and sadly Kate witnessed the whole attack. Whilst not physically injured, Kate is as traumatised by the event as the rest of the family and is missing her sister terribly.

The funds raised will also assist in getting the correct trauma counselling and play therapy for Kate.

Emma is strong, Emma is funny, Emma is brave and Emma will see her scars diminish with the help of her awesome medical team and specialists, with the unconditional love and support she has received so far and with the help of the good hearted public.

Oregon: Nearly $20,000 raised for girl, 10, mauled by Bull Mastiffs. Sheriff, who initially said there was no criminal investigation says now that there is a criminal investigation.

OREGON -- Local residents have donated nearly $20,000 to the family of a 10-year-old girl seriously injured during a dog attack earlier this month.

Ten-year-old Alyssa Stevens was hospitalized June 1 after being attacked by her neighbor’s dogs on the 3800 block of Shasta Way. She sustained injuries to her arm and torso and significant damage to her scalp.

Stevens was in the neighbor’s enclosed yard with the dogs — four mastiffs — when at least three of them attacked her. Authorities said the girl had been around the dogs multiple times before without incident.

Stevens was transported to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, in Portland, where she remained on a ventilator for the first two weeks and is currently undergoing physical therapy. A GoFundMe campaign has raised nearly $20,000 for her medical care out of a goal of $50,000.

Authorities said the girl was playing with four mastiffs in the owner’s yard on the 3800 block of Shasta Way when she was mauled by one or more of the dogs for an unknown reason.

She was transported in critical condition to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, in Portland, with injuries to her head and torso.

A release from the Klamath County Sheriff’s Office said it does not appear the owner of the dogs was at fault for the attack and no charges have been filed.

In an update about Stevens’ condition Sunday, father Darryn Stevens said Alyssa is struggling with her blood pressure and has required 40 units of blood due to an open wound on her head.

A Facebook group has also been established soliciting hair donations from local women to make wigs for Stevens, as doctors were unable to save her scalp.

“Until the delicate balance of pressure and body temp are met, her daily goals are tough to achieve,” said Darryn Stevens. “... She continues to fight as (I) keep my post in her room. Thank you all for the love and support.”

An unspeakable thing has happened to Alyssa Stevens. Last Thursday night June 2 she was taking care of neighbor's dogs. Three bullmastiffs mauled her to within an inch of her life. Our family's heart is broken. Doernbecher Children's Hospital is pulling out all the stops. We need your prayers. She has a mighty mountain to climb over the next months. Know she is a fighter. Any consideration to her gofundme is appreciated beyond words.

"Day 13, 1st time in as many days that I have heard my baby's voice....... today I got to hear it again. Ventilator removed. Words can not describe my joy. She is awake with life, now we start the next step to recovery. Without all your love and support this would be very tough. God bless."

After a brief trip to surgery we learned that none of Alyssa's scalp is viable she will never be able to grow her own hair.

I made this sight to ask all ladies everywhere will you join with me and cut your hair to donate to make Alyssa Stevens all sort of different styles and colors, she deserves the same experiences growing up as a young lady trying different styles, lets give her a style for her first Jr. High dance, first date, prom, graduation day, and the most memorable her wedding day.

Come on ladies our hair will grow back with time this could have been anyone of our babies lets show um what us mommas can do. Darryn Stevens her daddy was told by the faculty about a foundation and is really interested in using the Angel Hair Foundation located right in Eugene Oregon the people at Doernbeckers told him they make and give wigs for free. So come on lets do this whos with me?

Meanwhile, although the Sheriff initially said there was NO criminal investigation - that it was just a tragic accident, it seems they've decided they need to do an investigation before declaring it not a criminal matter (I mentioned this in the first post).

The Klamath County Sheriff’s Office has not ruled out the possibility of criminal charges as they continue to investigate a dog attack that scalped and seriously injured a 10-year-old girl earlier this month.

On Tuesday, Klamath County Sheriff Chris Kaber said, after investigating additional leads and conferring with prosecutors, he has decided to keep the investigation open due to the potential for charges of maintaining a dangerous dog.

Though Kaber initially said his office did not suspect criminal wrongdoing, he said Tuesday they have re-examined the incident and the possibility of charges remains on the table.

“We have determined that the case needs to remain open while we follow up on a couple of leads,” said Kaber. “… Nothing’s been completely decided.”
