Ohio: Trooper honored for saving elderly man's life after he was attacked by his daughter's Boxer

OHIO -- Roy Warner’s recovery from a dog attack has been slow and steady.

He spent 21 days in a Cleveland hospital and has had about 10 surgeries to date.

Monday afternoon, the 72-year-old man took a moment to pause his recovery to honor the Ohio Highway Patrol trooper who stopped the attack by killing the dog.

“He didn’t just rescue me. He saved my life,” Warner said. “I fought with this dog for about 15 minutes. I was losing my consciousness and my strength when Joe arrived. If he had stopped to put out a cigarette, I wouldn’t be here today.”

Trooper Joseph Glascox doesn’t smoke, but Warner’s reference to how even just a few-seconds-long act could have changed the outcome of the day was not lost on anyone in the room at the Elyria post of the Highway Patrol where Warner and Glascox reunited as the state agency honored Glascox with the highway patrol’s Certificate of Recognition.

Patrol Capt. Chris Zurcher said the troopers often use scanners so they can hear all the radio traffic available, including that of other law enforcement agencies and fire departments.

“This isn’t the first time, especially in this case, they saved a life because of it,” he said. “… Joe showed up, used his training, made the scene safe, was able to dispose of the dog and quickly attend to Roy, and here he is with us today.”

On Oct. 26, Glascox said he was dealing with a traffic stop in Brighton Township when he heard scanner traffic that a large dog was mauling a man. He immediately went to the New London home on state Route 18.

The dog, an older boxer, was on top of Warner. Warner was lying on his left side just inside the threshold of the front door. He was bleeding heavily and yelling for Glascox to shoot the dog.

The dog also bit Warner’s wife, but she was able to get away to make the 911 call.

Glascox said he yelled at the dog, hoping it would look up so he could have a better shot. It didn’t. Glascox fired one shot.

“I decided to go with what I had. I didn’t want to retreat back to my car and grab my rifle. I just went with the weapon I had and took the shot,” he said.

Video of the incident provided by the patrol doesn’t show the moment when Glascox shot the dog, but in the video you can hear audio of the first gunshot and the dog whimper loudly. Then, you can hear two more shots. The first shot slowed the dog down, but didn’t stop it. It charged at the Glascox. The trooper fired two more shots.

Looking back, Glascox, said the incident was less about him being heroic and more about him being at the right place at the right time.

“We are very rarely at that time of night in that area of the county because it’s close to shift change, us as well as the Sheriff’s (Office),” he said. “This is kind of one of those things where everything happened perfectly. All I did was stop the attack.’’

Glascox credited others with contributing to the outcome including the Wellington Fire Department, dispatchers, Life Flight and MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.

Roy Warner’s daughter, Rhonda Warner, said she was grateful for every working piece of the puzzle that saved her father.

“I don’t like to think about that, but I’m really glad he was there when he was and he acted so quickly,” she said. “I don’t think my dad would have made it had that not taken place.”

Warner has not returned to his home. He also has Parkinson’s disease and is recovering at a local rehabilitation center.

“He is recovering every day,” she said.

The Warner family home at 52967 state Route 18 is split into two living quarters with a door that separates the two areas, essentially making it a duplex. Roy Warner and his wife, Vesta Warner, lived there alongside other family members. The dogs belonged to his granddaughter.

In a Facebook post shortly after the incident, Rybecca Lynn Kubisen said the dog reacted naturally to protect the family when her grandfather mistakenly went into her home instead of his. There were at least three dogs at the home at the time of the attack. The county dog warden determined the remaining dogs were no threat to the family and allowed them to stay at the home.

DISGRACED LAW ENFORCEMENT CRIME FAMILY

Warner is a former Lorain County Drug Task Force officer. Warner; his wife, Vesta Warner; their daughter, Robyn Kubisen; and her ex-husband, Bart Kubisen, who is a former Lorain County Jail guard, faced criminal charges for allegedly stealing money from an elderly man and using the funds for personal expenses including the purchase of the home. The charges against the Kubisens have been resolved. The Warners’ charges still are pending.

COMMENT TO STORY:
Fair story. This miserable family is a mess, full of pit bulls and boxers (backyard breeders), Robyn plead guilty (even if she withdrew it) and Warner hasn't solved his criminal charges. This so-called victim needs to take care of some serious personal issues in the home.

Mississippi: In 2016, police say Harley Beech, 20, was part of a botched home invasion in which the victim's Pit Bull mix was shot

MISSISSIPPI -- Back in 2016, these three idiots thought they had a great idea -- break into the home of a known drug-dealer and rob him.

Clearly, these three had never seen "Boogie Nights" or they'd have known that robbing drug dealers is never a good idea.

Sheriff Troy Peterson has said the three had targeted a neighbor's home to commit an armed robbery "for dope," but the doors to that home were locked. So these three morons decided to go next door and see what they could steal.

Theresa Lero, the woman who lives there, told deputies she was had been outside and walked in to find strangers in the back of her house. They fled and she and her dog followed them out, the document said. The woman said they fired shots that struck her dog twice and also fired in her direction.

They ran back to their car, only to find they'd gotten it stuck in the mud. Haha! What morons! So they all fled into the darkness on foot, leaving their clearly identifiable vehicle -with its VIN number and state tags - behind.

If this poor dog hadn't been shot and injured, it would be totally comical. I foresee these three idiots being prominently featured in other bungling mugshot reports. Of course, that's if they don't get themselves killed trying to rob another drug dealer.

Ohio: Victor Vallejo Sr. facing Animal Cruelty charge after his Pit Bull was found dead on porch, curled up in a ball and "frozen solid"

OHIO -- The Toledo Area Humane Society is investigating the death of a dog in central Toledo that was found outside and “frozen solid.”

The female dog had died after curling up on the front porch of a house at 1057 King Street.

“I don’t know how long she was out there,” Megan Brown, a cruelty investigator with the humane society, said. “She was frozen solid.”

The recorded low temperature the night of Dec 28th in Toledo, Ohio was -8 °F.

Ms. Brown said an underweight male dog was inside the house. She saw him through a window and seized him that afternoon after obtaining a search warrant.

“He was visibly shivering,” Ms. Brown said, adding that his ribs and spine are prominent and the house was very cold.

Contacted by The Blade on Thursday afternoon, Victor Vallejo Sr., 40, said the dogs are his and added he was unaware of any issues. He said he last saw them two or three days ago and left them both inside.

The utilities to the house were recently shut off, he said.

“I wasn’t staying there, but I was going back and forth and feeding them. They had plenty of food and water,” he said. “I’ve been staying here and there at the moment. I kind of fell on some bad times.”

So he locked them inside an unheated house that, based on the looks of it, has 40-year old insulation and 40-year old single-pane windows - the kind you have to put plastic up in the winter to try to keep the cold out. Then he says he only goes by every "two or three days" to bring them food and water. So for "two or three days" at a time they're starving.

Meanwhile, he looks well-fed and certainly doesn't look like he's been sleeping on the freezing streets.

CAN'T PAY HIS BILLS, WANTS TO BREED PIT BULLS
He said both are American bullies (aka Pit Bulls). The 3-year-old female was named Nanas, while the 4-year-old male is Haze. He said claims he loves his dogs, paid a lot of money for them, and intended to breed them.

Mr. Vallejo said he isn’t sure how Nanas got outside.

“I don’t know how they would have got out,” he said. “Everything was locked up tight.”

Ms. Brown said neither dog had any food or water, and Nanas was in the fenced front yard. There were blankets and a pillow on the porch, which had a roof, but no shelter from the bitter temperatures.

“She didn’t appear to be in poor health, but it’s hard to tell when she’s curled up and frozen,” Ms. Brown said.

Mr. Vallejo said Nanas had gotten loose in August. Records from the Lucas County Canine Care & Control show she was taken to the county shelter by a citizen Sept. 21 as a stray.

An initial medical evaluation there noted Nanas had fleas and swollen ears but seemed otherwise healthy. Mr. Vallejo reclaimed her the following day and purchased a 2017 license for her.

Mr. Vallejo said claims when he got her back, she had lost weight and was sick. He said he hadn’t yet been able to get her back to full health.

OK so that was in September... three months ago. He just admitted he never took her to the vet despite his allegation that she "had lost weight and was sick" the entire three months.

CITED TO COURT, DIDN'T BOTHER TO SHOW UP
Nanas was seen by a canine control officer Oct. 22 running loose on King Street, but Mr. Vallejo contained her while the officer was there. He was cited for a dog running at large and has a bench warrant from Toledo Municipal Court for failing to appear for a hearing on the citation.

Ms. Brown said other than being underweight, Haze appears OK.

“He looks to be pretty good,” Ms. Brown said. “He’s sweet. He was malnourished and dehydrated, but I think he’ll be fine.”

She said the humane society is pursuing possible animal cruelty charges in Toledo Municipal Court.
