(June 2017) North Carolina: Cop uses lunch cooler to save 2 puppies left inside hot car; Latoya Reid arrested and charged with Animal Cruelty

NORTH CAROLINA -- Two puppies are recovering after a Rock Hill Police officer rescued them from a car in nearly 100-degree weather.

The pups were spotted inside a vehicle at the Cherry Park Shopping Center parking lot around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in the blazing sun.

The officer said the puppies were so overheated, she had to put the pups in a cooler to bring their temperatures down.

Their owner, Latoya Reid, is accused of leaving the puppies in the car while she was getting her hair done.

The temperatures at the time of the incident was 94 degrees.

Rock Hill Police Officer Robin Gander's quick thinking saved the pups' lives.

"The only thing I had on me was my food cooler that I kept my lunch in," Gander said. "I was able to put them so they sat in my cooler. They both fit in there and (I) just started blasting the AC."

Reid was arrested and charged with ill treatment of animals.

Studies show, even in 60-degree weather, on a sunny day a car can get up to 100 degrees in just minutes -- even with the windows cracked.

NBC Charlotte's Billie Jean Shaw talked to Dr. Robin LePardo of Central Carolinas Animal Hospital about what that means for pets.

“The fur will insulate their bodies and then they start having clots, the clots can go to their brain and they can die.”

(June 2017) Missouri: Despite admitting to chaining up his dog, standing on the chain so the dog couldn't get away repeatedly beating it in the head with a hammer in an effort to kill it, Perry County Sheriff Gary Schaaf claims there's not enough evidence to charge the owner with animal cruelty. Either Sheriff Schaaf is corrupt or ignorant - and needs to be replaced.

MISSOURI -- Fox 2 has confirmed a gruesome dog beating in Perry County:  a dog nearly beaten to death with a hammer.

It’s unlikely the man who beat the dog will face criminal charges, Perry County Sheriff, Gary Schaaf, told Fox 2.

It's been an amazing recovery for Benny, the Chocolate Lab, since the beating on May 24th.

The man who beat him late last month thought Benny was dead, Schaaf said, but there was not enough evidence to charge him with a crime.

Why is this man not a good enough witness? If he's willing to give the police a written statement... if he's willing to get up on the stand and testify that this man told him these things, why isn't that good enough? Why would he perjure himself - and face a felony charge for lying? What does he have to gain from that?

A small child beaten with a hammer may not be able to communicate that this person did it to them, but if the suspect tells another adult what happened, you're telling me that's not enough to charge that person with child abuse??

This is pure laziness from the Perry County Sheriff's Office - and the prosecutor's office. This suspect told the truth when he spoke with Steve Svehla, but when police spoke with him, he changed his story knowing he would be in trouble if he told them the truth. He's clearly lying and Sheriff Gary Schaaf is taking the word of a POS animal abuser over a law-abiding citizen who has no reason to lie.

THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT IS THE ONE WHO GOT STEVE SVEHLA INVOLVED BY CALLING HIM.. NOW THEY'RE CALLING HIM A LIAR AND SAYING HIS WORD IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH

The sheriff’s department called in Steve Svehla of the Rough Roads Animal Rescue in Perryville after responding to a call in rural Perry County of Benny’s owner beating him unconscious.

“He [Benny’s owner] just told me he said he got fed up, the dog had chased a car.  He had to get the dog.  He flipped out, took the dog out to the woods, this is his statement:  chained the dog to a tree, stood on the chain, and thought he was going to kill him, thought he had killed him, but he knocked him out, so he walked away,” Svehla said.

Svehla has records of statements from Benny’s owner, a relative, and neighbors.  He’s also documented Benny’s wounds and vet care.

Benny’s owner admits beating Benny with a hammer, Schaaf said, but he changed his story and is now telling investigators it was self-defense after the dog allegedly attacked him.

OK so where are his bite wounds? What hospital did he go to? Hospitals are required to report all animal bites - for rabies investigation. What injuries does he have? Did investigators ask him why he is now calling Steve Svehla a liar? Why would he have told Steve Svehla this story about being mad because the dog was chasing after a car and beating the dog because he was angry???

There’s no evidence to refute that claim, Schaaf said, no witnesses saw the alleged attack or the actual beating.

“The dog wasn’t on him and he grabbed the nearest thing and started beating him off,” Svehla said.  “He put the dog on a chain.  If the dog’s that vicious, how’d he get him hooked up?  Took him out to the woods, stood on the chain and beat him with a hammer.

"Come on… my concern is the county just passes on this [animal cruelty] all the time…right now, it’s just free reign.  If you don’t like that animal, do whatever you want [and the Perry County Sheriff's Department won't do anything about it].”

Benny’s owner did surrender Benny and Benny's brother, another chocolate lab named Bowser, to Rough Roads.  Neither dogs is vicious and will be available for adoption soon, Svehla said.

Unless there was new evidence in the case, there will likely be no charges, Schaaf said.

FLORIDA -- An owl stranded on the road, looking all ragged, was rescued Tuesday night by law enforcement officials.

Flagler County deputies Lichty and Smith, with Sgt. Weaver, found the owl on County Road 13, according to the sheriff’s Facebook page.

They think it may have been hit by a car. The sad-looking bird was quickly taken to Flagler County Animal Hospital.

Several people online expressed their thanks for a job well done.

(June 2017) Florida: Endangered tortoises tortured and bashed to death; police asking for information - $7,200 reward

FLORIDA -- As 11-year-old Walker Speir rode his bicycle June 8 along a path between Summerfield and Greenbrook, he wasn’t surprised to see the gopher tortoise that lived along the walkway, as he normally did.

What shocked him, however, was when he rode the same path just a few hours later and found the tortoise dead with its shell cracked. He and his brother, Owen, also saw a second tortoise farther down the path sitting in a pool of blood.

Walker texted his friend, 10-year-old Marina Redden: “Come look at the turtles.”

“It was terrible,” Marina Redden said when she visited the site.

Marina’s dad, Ray Redden, took the injury tortoise to the Bayshore Animal Hospital in Sarasota.

Marina was hoping their actions would save the tortoise.

“He was going ‘ahhh’ and gurgling,” Marina Redden said of the sounds the tortoise made during the trip.

Ultimately, the tortoise’s injuries proved too severe and he died, too.

Marina’s mom, Angela Redden, said someone purposely targeted the creatures, most likely slamming their shells with a hammer or flipping them upside down and repeatedly throwing them onto the concrete sidewalk.

Ray Redden said there was one circular splatter near the first dead turtle, with no marks indicating it had moved itself off the sidewalk.

The second turtle sat it in a pool of blood and there were two other similar marks — circular pools of blood — on the sidewalk. A vehicle would have created a different blood splatter pattern, Redden believes.

“There was no blood trail,” Ray Redden said.

“It’s disappointing,” Walker Speir said. “They looked so calm and nice, and they were beaten to death.”

Residents of the Lakewood Ranch community are outraged by the death of the tortoises, who lived along the pathway just west of Greenbrook Adventure Park and near Heron’s Nest Park.

Summerfield Glades resident Greg Fielder and his wife, Sandy, have seen the gopher tortoise along the path to Heron’s Nest park for at least five years. Sandy Fielder saw the dead turtle on her way to the dog park in Greenbrook’s Adventure Park and told her husband.

“His shell was cracked right open and everything was coming out,” said Greg Fielder. “People walk there all morning. It really made me mad. It really broke my heart. I got a shovel and buried it out there in the woods.”

The Center for Biological Diversity announced Monday it is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission also has a $600 reward offered. Neighbors are contributing $1,600 to the $7,200 total reward.

The Arizona-based non-profit has an office in St. Petersburg and is dedicated to protecting endangered species.

"Taking just one tortoise can affect generations to come," said attorney Elise Bennett. "Gopher tortoises are defenseless. Other than their shells, that's all they have and to think that someone would do something so brutal and cruel."

Gopher tortoises are a threatened species protected under state law. Intentionally injuring or killing one is a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison, $5,000 fine, or both.

Anyone with information should contact the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission at 888-404-FWCC (3922) or Tip@MyFWC.com.

(June 2017) Idaho: Jesse Longoria, 45, tortured and beheaded a cat. A month later he grabbed a woman by the arms, causing bruises. Bingham County prosecutors were willing to throw out the animal torture death charge in exchange for him pleading guilty to grabbing a woman's arms and being in possession of marijuana. Hmm, bruises on arms and some pot vs. torturing and chopping off a cat's head. Which one seems more serious to you?

IDAHO -- A Fort Hall man accused of beheading a cat has backed out of a plea agreement, and now prosecutors are planning to refile an animal cruelty charge.

Jesse Longoria, 45, was in magistrate court in Bingham County for a sentencing hearing Thursday when he requested to withdraw his guilty plea to misdemeanor charges of domestic battery and possession of marijuana.

During the hearing, Longoria claimed he must have been influenced by the unknown substance at the time. Longoria told Magistrate Judge Ryan Boyer he did not want to be known as a “wife beater” and would not have pleaded guilty to such a charge while in a normal state of mind.

Boyer reluctantly allowed Longoria to withdraw his plea.

“The defendant had a prior plea agreement to plead guilty to domestic battery, but he elected to withdraw his guilty plea, which results in both cases being placed back on the docket due the defendant’s inability to follow through with the plea agreement,” Bingham County Prosecuting Attorney Cleve Colson told EastIdahoNews.com.

The domestic battery and marijuana charge stemmed from an April 8 incident where court records show Longoria left several bruises on a woman’s arms by grabbing her tightly.

Bingham County, the shame of Idaho

During that incident, Longoria told family members and police that someone was coming to kill him and that several wounds on his chest were because a vampire had bitten him. Later, when he was booked into the Bingham County Jail, he told officers the wounds were from burning himself. He also told police that he believes the marijuana he smoked was laced, or tampered with some kind of substance and that was likely to blame for his erratic actions.

Prosecutors had worked with Longoria to plead guilty to those charges in exchange for dropping misdemeanor animal cruelty charges stemming from a March 4 incident where he was arrested for allegedly torturing and chopping off a struggling cat's head with a knife. Details of that incident were not available as of Tuesday afternoon.

That agreement was nullified this week when Longoria backed out the agreement, and prosecutors now plan to refile the animal cruelty charge.

When asked about the original animal cruelty charge that was dismissed, Colson said: “Our intention is to seek justice on all charges at this time for the defendant’s conduct.”

Don't you love how they just totally ignored addressing WHY they would even consider dismissing a torture death animal cruelty charge against someone as deviant as Jesse Longoria? Now Colson is trying to behave as though Bingham County Idaho cares about animals.

Look down at his arrest info: they gave him a measly $300 bond for TORTURING AND KILLING A CAT BY CHOPPING OFF ITS HEAD. WHAT ELSE DID HE DO TO THE CAT, STAB IT REPEATEDLY, STRANGLE IT, SET IT ON FIRE, STOMP ON IT AND BREAK ITS BONES?? Bingham County Idaho does NOT care about animal cruelty.

New hearing dates will be scheduled for Longoria in Bingham County Court. He remains free on bond.

(June 2017) New Jersey: Yorkie mauled by Pit Bull. Vet bill is more than $2,500. Pit Bull owner has not paid one red cent.

NEW JERSEY -- Konsuelo the Yorkie was attacked last week by a pit bull in the City of Bordentown.

Her owner Michele recently moved into the renovated Union Pants factory on Spring Street with her two Yorkies.

A Pit Bull got away from his owner and viciously attacked Konsuelo as Michele stood there watching in horror, trying to keep her second dog out of harms way.

The neighbors came, the police came, the dog owner was identified.  The situation was grave with the evisceration of her organs as she was assisted by another resident with medical knowledge. Konsuelo's Vet bills are too much for Michele to handle.

The pit bull's owner has not paid one cent.

I walk my dog past that building every day and shiver at the thought, that had we been there on that day and time, I'd be the one living this nightmare.

Michele is a senior with limited income or computer experience so I am starting this fund for her.

My purpose for this go fund me page is to ask for donations of any amount to help Michele pay her Veterinarian's bill.  Consider if everyone gave $10 or $20, it would add up quickly and help Michele put this horrible situation behind her.

Bordentown is a caring friendly community and I know if we stand together, we can raise these needed funds.  Please share this page with anyone you think may be willing to help. Thank you.

Update 1
Konsuelo is doing well considering the large number of stitches and removal of her uterus which was punctured during the attack. Thank you for all the donations. Please share to get the word around.

Update 2
I'd like to thank everyone who donated or inquired about Konsuelo's recovery. Please share this post with friends so we can try to achieve the goal of the Vet's bill.

At court, the judge didn't even ask me one question and he did NOT fine the owners; they had to just pay court costs. Thank God I'm not the one who is destitute!

(June 2017) California: Dog's chest ripped open after Pit Bull attack

CALIFORNIA -- Our poor Simba was attacked over Memorial Day Weekend by a large Pit bull in the neighborhood.

He has suffered major complications from his surgery to repair the severe injuries which he suffered. He needs intensive care to survive and if he gets it, the skilled doctors at SAGE have told us he can survive.

His muscles have been torn open and he doesn't even have enough skin left from the attack to get stitches that will close up the wound. We have gone to several doctors and he needs this intensive treatment that will give us a very good chance at saving his life.

Simba, before the attack

Many of you have met Simba and he is a sweet and quirky pup who loves people and other pets. Simba has been a part of our family and your lives since he was a puppy and we can't bear to let his life go.

It would mean the world if you could help us save his life.

Here are some memories we have of Simba...I'm sure you all have wonderful memories with him as well. My friends from back home in Belmont, friends from UC Davis, and those who have met him in San Francisco...he's been a friend to you all.

UPDATE 1
Dear Friends and Family of Simba,

I wanted to thank you all for your support and kindness during this hard time. Simba is healing and the doctors say he is making good progress. He still has a long road to recovery but his chances are getting better with every treatment. Thanks to your help, you have given us the chance to keep his treatment going under the care of very capable and compassionate doctors and surgeons.

Although the expenses for Simba far surpass what I can afford today, I have been fortunate enough to secure a private beneficiary and loan for the remainder of his treatment. We are continuing to work with the police to track down the owner and dog and hope to do what we can to protect others from having a serious incident like this.

I deeply appreciate your generosity and I would never ask for more than we needed. I will be closing the GoFundMe as of today. The outpour of help and generosity was overwhelming and I am so thankful to have the support of you all.

GoFundMe is an amazing place to turn to when you are faced with an unexpected tragedy such as Simba's. I encourage all of you to not feel ashamed or embarrassed to ask for help when you need it, no matter what the circumstance as long as it is the right thing to do. I hope to pay this all forward one day and I hope to be there for you in your time of need.

Although the GoFundMe is closed, I'll continue to provide you updates on his progress so that you all know what you've done for him. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers as he needs them more than ever today. I am eternally grateful for your compassion and help.

Thank you,
Katrina
Help spread the word!

UPDATE 2
Simba is thankful for your care and help today for his procedure. He was very good at the doctor's office and he only let out one yelp from the pain but he was very strong and got through it.

(June 2017) New Mexico: Sunny's little body couldn't handle all the trauma after being attacked by two Pit Bulls. Owner's GoFundMe page still open to help them with the $8,000 in medical bills owed for trying to save sweet Sunny's life

NEW MEXICO -- Sunny, one of our cats, was attacked by two pit bulls while playing in the yard today.

Sunny is currently at the vet and being stabilized to undergo surgery for abdominal wounds and possible internal injuries. The VCA Animal Hospital estimates the cost for stabilizing Sunny so she can go to surgery and the cost of the surgery, to be almost $8,000.00.

We have been spending all our extra money on helping Colt, the dog that was attacked by coyotes in April, and now that our own pet needs surgery, we find ourselves without the resources to help her.

Sunny will be 2 on June 20th. She is much too young to die just because she was playing in the wrong place at the wrong time and her family has spent their money helping another hurt animal. If you could find it in your heart to help save Sunny's young life, Sunny, my children, and I would be forever grateful.

Sunny needs surgery TODAY (June 4, 2017) so the sooner we can raise the funds for her surgery and treatment the better her chance of survival will be.

Won't you please help Sunny?

UPDATE 1
Good Evening,
Sunny went to surgery yesterday after being stabilized. It took approximately 3 hours to stabilize her and then she was in surgery over 3 hours. Thankfully, none of her internal organs were damaged as they initially thought. I guess having a little tummy fat is a good thing because it protected her vital organs. Unfortunately, they cannot stabilize her blood pressure (too low) and her labs are all out of whack including her potassium which is at a critical level which in turn could lead to dangerous changes in her heart rhythm. They are planning on administering FFP (fresh frozen plasma) and or a blood transfusion tonight to try and stabilize her in addition to giving intravenous insulin and glucose to lower her potassium level.

Sunny is in critical condition and has had a doctor at her bedside all day. What Sunny needs is a fighting chance. For this to happen, I must be able to cover the cost of her treatment. Again, if you could find it in your heart to help give Sunny a fighting chance, Sunny, my children and I would be forever grateful.
Thank you in advance for any help that you can give little Sunny.

UPDATE 2
Good Morning,
Sunny made it through the night and is in guarded condition. She has had 3 techs and a doctor at her bedside all night. I am told she is the most critical patient they have now.

Sunny’s FFP infusion ended about 1130 last night and when I spoke to one of the techs caring for her at 3 am, she was more alert and trying to lift her head. Her blood pressures are slightly improved, and she is urinating. I am told that when they changed her bed after she urinated, she was meowing. Sunny’s potassium is much improved, but now it is a little low. The doctor, also named Sunny, said that she would prefer it being a little low to critically high; and I agree. These are all good signs, but Sunny is nowhere near being out of the woods yet. Dr. Young, an internist is going to consult on Sunny this morning. The hope is that they will be able to stabilize her blood pressures today.

Again, Sunny and I need your help. If you can help Sunny in anyway, it would be greatly appreciated. No donation is too small to help this young cat. There are two ways to help: Donate here or call the VCA directly (292-5353) and donate to Sunny’s account #42271. If you are unable to help financially, if you could please keep Sunny in your thoughts and prayers, that would help too.
Have a wonderful day.
Barbie

UPDATE 3
Good morning,
Yesterday Dr Young, the internist, placed a "long line" in Sunny. This is the equivalent to a PICC line or central line in a human. Dr. Young also placed an NG (nasogastric tube) to start feedings. Sunny is getting 5 ml/hour of food dripped into her tummy. So far, Sunny is tolerating it well.

Sunny's labs looked good yesterday but her blood pressure remains low.
They moved Sunny to an oxygen cage and added a heater to help Sunny conserve energy. With the oxygen, sunny doesn't have to work so hard to breathe and oxygen aids in wound healing. With the additional heat, Sunny will not need to be expending energy to stay warm and therefore, she can use that same energy to heal.

Sunny had her eyes open yesterday during our visit and even nodded her head once.

Sunny continues to have one on one care at this time. Both Brandy and Katie, her nursing techs last night, stated that Sunny's edema in her legs has improved and she is just slightly more alert.

I will give you additional updates as I get them.

Thank you to everyone that has supported little Sunny either through donation and/or prayer. Sunny and I couldn't do it without the support of caring and generous people like you.

I hope your day is bright and "Sunny".
Barbie

UPDATE 4
Good Morning,
Sunny is still in critical condition but she is still fighting. Sunny still has a one to one nursing tech but no longer has a doctor at her bedside.

Sunny’s “long line” that they put in on Tuesday was pulled yesterday afternoon due to it “no longer working”. They did not place a new one I am told because the “criticalist” (specially trained veterinarian dedicated to treating life–threatening conditions) Dr. Reese, didn’t feel that Sunny would survive the procedure. Sunny also lost her urinary catheter and a peripheral IV site yesterday. Sunny’s NG tube clogged up and had to be replaced yesterday as well. Apparently, yesterday was not a good day for Sunny’s lines.

Sunny had compression stockings on when I got there but unfortunately, I didn’t get a picture before the doctor put a blanket on her to help conserve body heat. Sunny’s temp this morning at 0200 was 100.4 without the blanket and with the “hotdog” (heating pad) turned down, so it looks as though she is starting to maintain her body temperature better. Her edema in her legs is much improved and although they removed her compression stockings around 0100 today, Brandy, her nurse, stated she will be putting them back on later this morning. They will be used intermittently to help with the edema.

Although Sunny’s labs are stable, we are still fighting to stabilize her blood pressure. Her MAP or mean arterial pressure was hanging around 55 this morning. We need the MAP to be greater than 60 otherwise she will be shunting blood away from her vital organs to keep her brain perfused.

Sunny is continuing to receive nutrition via her NG tube and appears to be tolerating it well. She continues to urinate and defecate so there does not seem to be any issues with her bowel or bladder at this time.

We decorated Sunny’s oxygen cage yesterday with pictures of St. Francis, Jesus and a guardian angel. We also gave Sunny a St. Francis figurine to hold on to. (see picture) Sunny needs all the good thoughts and prayers you can send her way. She is a fighter, but she can’t do it alone.

Sunny’s hospital bill isn’t getting any smaller. If you could please send the Go Fund Me link to all your social media contacts and share it with your family and friends, Sunny and I would appreciate it. https://www.gofundme.com/help-sunny-shine-again

If people would prefer to donate directly to the VCA, their number is 292-5353 and Sunny’s account number is #42271. No donation is too small, but every donation makes an impact on Sunny’s survival.

Thank you for helping Sunny to shine again. I hope you have a nice, "Sunny" day.
Barbie

UPDATE 5
Good Morning,
I regret to tell you that my beautiful Sunny succumbed to her wounds and has passed away. Sunny fought the good fight, but apparently, she went into SIRS (Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome) and she was just too weak and tired to fight anymore.

Sunny was a special kitty. She was very loving and trusting, which ultimately appears to have caused her death. Sunny leaves behind 5 litter mates and her mama cat. Sunny's other litter mate, Skyler disappeared from our house in February. It has not been a good spring at the Burns house for kitties. Although my children and I are just heartbroken when we look at Sunny’s litter mates and mom, we take solace in a quote from Lord Byron that states “Once you have loved, You will always love. For what's in your mind may escape, but what's in your heart will remain forever.” Sunny will forever remain in our hearts.

Thank you to all who donated to Sunny's account and/or sent prayers and good thoughts Sunny's way. Sunny and I appreciate it more than you will ever know. I will be keeping the Go Fund me site active in case anyone would like to make a donation to help cover Sunny’s medical expenses. I know it is a lot to ask, but the bill is enormous and I could use some help. Thank you in advance for anyone who can find it in their heart to help us out.

Nishan Panwar said “Death takes the body. God takes the soul. Our mind holds the memories. Our heart keeps the love. Our faith lets us know we will meet again. I believe that one day I will be reunited with my beloved Sunny so in closing, I will end with the Rainbow Bridge Poem.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
