31 Dogs Rescued, Woman Charged With Cruelty

TENNESSEE -- A Henry County woman has been charged with animal cruelty after 31 dogs were seized from her home northwest of Paris.

Henry County Sheriff Monte Belew said the dogs were malnourished and were kept in squalid conditions.

"[There] were feces all over the floor, [their] water
was contaminated. [It was] horrendous conditions
for the dogs to be living in"

Belew told The Paris Post-Intelligencer he thinks some of the dogs were being raised for sale while others were likely pets. Most are Shih Tzus, a small breed of dog.

Deputies charged 66-year-old Cheryl Anne Kidd with cruelty to animals. A neighbor's complaint started the investigation on Thursday.

The Henry County Sheriff's Department Animal Shelter has 10 of the dogs, and the Humane Society members are caring for the other 21. They will eventually be available for adoption.

No telephone listing for Kidd was available. She is due in court on Tuesday.
