Dog attack sends 9 year-old to hospital

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A nine-year old boy was sent to the hospital after a Great Dane reportedly attacked him Wednesday evening outside a home in south Knoxville.

The victim told police he was playing tag with some friends and his six year-old brother when he fell while running along the fence line. That's when, he said, the 170-180 lb.dog leaped onto the side of the fence, knocking it over, and attacked him.

The dog's owner, Eric Glasgow, who is an employee at WVLT, was inside at the time, according to police. Reports say he looked outside when he heard kids screaming and yelling and saw his dog, Brutus, on top of the boy, while the victim's brother tried to pull the dog off.

Glasgow ran outside, got his dog off the child, and locked it inside while he went to treat the boy. The child suffered several lacerations to his face, neck, and both arms, according to police, and was rushed to UT Medical Center.

Animal Control Officers confiscated Brutus for a mandatory ten day quarantine period and reported the incident.

A witness flagged down investigators at the scene and told officers that the children involved in this incident were constantly teasing and antagonizing the animals in the neighborhood and have been told several times by residents to stop.

A young boy recovers in the hospital tonight after a Great Dane attacked him.

The Knox County Sheriff's Department says the boy and his brother were playing tag with other kids in a South Knox County neighborhood.

The dog broke down the fence, and tossed the boy around. His 6-year-old brother tried to get the dog off of him.

Animal control took the dog, and the boy went to UT Medical Center with serious injuries to the face and arms.

The fence had storm damage, and was supposed to be repaired.
