Ferocious dog fatally attacks terrier

REDLANDS, CO -- A tiny terrier is mauled to death by a vicious dog that's still at large.

"Her back end was just chomped, and there was blood all over me," says Jane Buzan, of the final memories she has of puppy Jewel, whom she cherished for four years after rescuing her from the pound. "High spirited, fabulous dog," says Buzan.

Buzan says a ferocious dog attacked Jewel yesterday, as she walked her and her other dog Cocoa. "It was the biggest nightmare I could ever imagine."

Rest in peace Jewel

Buzan says a woman had a dog on a leash in the same area, when a tan pit bull charged up the street probably following its owner. "The woman yelled, 'how did you get out?" says Buzan.

The pit bull wildly bit into the terrier, as Jane struggled to free her puppy. "I was holding on desperately... He was the type that doesn't release."

Jane finally freed Jewel and immediately rushed her to the nearest vet, but there was nothing that could be done. The dog passed.

The pit bull is likely still in the neighborhood, according to Buzan and Mesa County Animal Services. who are searching for the pit bull's owners.

"Some people didn't even open their doors," says Buzan.

11 News knocked on multiple doors on the block, many remaining closed with the sound of deep barks from inside.

The surviving dog Cocoa

"It's a very aggressive dog, and trying to keep an eye on my own dog, kind of does make me a little nervous," says Kate Dreiling who walks her dog regularly in the neighborhood.

"We have parks in our neighborhood that our girls go to all the time... and I'll always wonder every time I see someone walking a dog," says Katelyn Daggers, who has two girls, a three year old, and a ten month old.

It's suddenly become a lonely walk for Buzan and Cocoa. "I'm in disbelief. I'm definitely living in a fog."

Mesa County Animal Services says they're actively trying to find the pit bull, which they say would be impounded immediately. The dog could then be euthanized, depending on the findings of the investigation and a court ruling.

Anyone in the area who has seen a tan pit bull is asked to call Mesa County Animal Services at 970-242-4646.
