OREGON -- Keizer police shot and killed a pit bull that charged at two officers conducting a domestic violence investigation late Thursday.
Police went to a home in the 1300 block of Country Glen Avenue NE about 8:50 p.m. after a neighbor called 911 and reported hearing a woman saying "you're choking me," Keizer Police Capt. Jeff Kuhns said.
Police found a woman at the home with injuries on her neck and chest and a pant leg was shredded. She said her ex-husband had attacked her while the pit bull bit at her leg.
Sgt. Jeff Goodman tried to talk to the man upstairs but a pit bull, Zeus, came charging at him, Kuhns said. The dog charged at the officer twice before DaRouse closed the dog in a bedroom with the female victim's one-year-old child and went to talk with Goodman.
Police arrested LaNell E. DaRouse, 31, on a charge of domestic assault in the fourth degree and five counts of strangulation.
While officers were outside with the suspect, the pit bull began growling and acting aggressive to another officer inside the home, Kuhns said.
Officer Rodney Bamford and the woman were yelling trying to contain the dog, which drew Goodman's attention. Goodman went back into the house and he and another officer fired their Tasers at the dog as it jumped over an ottoman at Bamford, Kuhns said.
As the dog lunged at him, Bamford fatally shot the dog in the head, Kuhns said.
Two children home at the time did not see the shooting.
Keizer Police Department allows the use of deadly force to stop a dangerous animal that poses an imminent threat to safety, Kuhns said in a statement.
[NOTE: The Marion County Sheriff's Office listed him on their site, mentioning the most serious crime he's alleged to have commiteed: strangulation.]
