NEW JERSEY -- A Bridgeton police officer on foot entered an alley on Wood Street, leading to Irving Avenue, during an investigation when a loose 2-year-old male pit bull attacked him.
The officer fired two rounds at the canine, striking it once in the front right paw. The officer was not injured.
Bridgeton Animal Control and representatives from the Cumberland County SPCA were called to the scene.
The dog was taken to Dr. Bill McAlonan’s Wilwynn's Animal Hospital, on Greenwich Road, for treatment. The dog will held until a hearing.
The unnamed owner will face municipal ordinance charges for allowing the dog to run loose, having no license for the pit bull and keeping a potentially vicious animal.
