FLORIDA -- Family members said their 4-year-old girl needs plastic surgery and three others are recovering from injuries after a pit bull attack earlier this month in Lake City.
Police say the attack occurred June 8 near Southwest Packard Street. When Columbia County deputies arrived, the girl's maternal grandparents were trying to fend off two pit bulls.
Jail records show Columbia County sheriff's deputies arrested the dog's two owners, Christopher and Kathryn Schell, charging them with felony child neglect. The couple are the 4-year-old victim's paternal grandparents.
A spokesman for the Sheriff's Office said the Schell's pit bulls had bitten their own children in the past.
According to the Lake City Reporter, the two dogs were euthanized on Wednesday after 10 days of observation to ensure they did not have rabies. The Schells were released from jail on $5,000 bond.
