Animal control officer shoots tornado victim's dog

OKLAHOMA  -- Bryan Stout is mourning the loss of his two dogs, Jake and Snuggles. They were shot and killed by an Newcastle animal control officer on Saturday. "I couldn't believe it, I was just shocked," he said.

The family's home was destroyed in the tornado so a neighbor was keeping their dogs.

City officials say the dogs got out of the fenced kennel and a business owner complained about them. Animal control responded to the call.

As stated in the police report, when the officer arrived, "The two dogs were becoming more aggressive and it was becoming a dangerous situation."

Stout says his dogs are not aggressive.

"They're labs and they're not tall or big dogs at all. There's not a lot they can do," Stout said.

The officer continued saying, "I had to make a decision for the safety of the citizens in the area."

He says he tried to tranquilize one dog but it didn't work so he had to shoot them.

Now Stout says all he has left now are memories of his beloved dogs.

"Jake was so fun to be around. He was just everything you would want in a dog. And snuggles, from the time he was able to dig out of the puppy box, he was just laying in our arms. That's why we named him Snuggles."
