Boy nearly run over by semi truck after being chased and attacked by pit bull mix

HURON COUNTY, MI -- A Huron County boy is recovering at home tonight after a very scary Monday afternoon.

The 12-year-old was riding his bike along North Van Dyke near Filion in Meade Township when a neighbor's dog began to chase him.

Zachary Deacons was headed to his grandma's house when the pit bull mix broke free from its tether. Zach's dad was in his garage when he heard screaming.

"And I looked down the road down there and there was a semi parked. And when I saw it stopped, I didn't know what had happened yet, but I ran closer and there was a bike laying there in the middle of the road on the other side. And that was the same bike he had and I thought he was dead," John Deacons said.

John soon discovered Zach had been bitten by a dog and luckily was not hit by the semi-truck that had to slam on its brakes to avoid the scared 12-year-old.

is now at the local shelter

"He was all shook up. He was standing there crying, bloody. Blood coming down the side of his face, a big gash in the side of his face," John said.

Zach had run in front of the truck trying to escape the dog. He says when he saw the dog coming toward him, he pedaled as fast as he could, but it wasn't fast enough.

The dog quickly caught up with him and began biting his legs.

Zach eventually got off his bike, ran across the road, and then fell.

The pit bull mix then sank his teeth into Zach's face before someone finally pulled the dog off of him.

Today, he's home recovering with his mom and dad. They're not sure how many stitches he got, but they do know there are several bite marks on his leg and head.

For now, the pit bull is under 10-day quarantine at the Thumb Animal Shelter.

In addition, the Sheriff says the dog's owner faces two misdemeanor charges related to the attack.
