Shelbra Freeman’s arm was badly torn up by the dog last week, and her ear was severely injured. She also has bites on her shoulder, head and back and underwent surgery last week, so she was unable to talk about the attack until she spoke with News 4’s Mandy Gaither on Monday.
Freeman said the pit bull attacked her as she tried to warn a mother across the street from her home on on Victor Circle that a neighbor's dog had gotten off its chain.
"The dog was loose and I was just trying to save them kids' lives," said Freeman.
But then the dog turned on Freeman, attacking her and taking her to the ground.
"I was just praying, 'God, please don't let me die. Please, Jesus, don't let me die. Help me, Lord Jesus.'
Freeman said the dog eventually ran off as she continued to pray out loud.
A neighbor grabbed a towel and wrapped it around Freeman’s arm to stop the blood until an ambulance arrived.
"I'm glad it happened to me, because if it had happened to those little kids, there wouldn't have been no way. No way," said Freeman.
Chad McBride with the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office said the dog is being quarantined for 10 days at the Anderson County Animal Shelter. Its owner, David Milner, has been cited for not having proof of rabies vaccine and for a dog running at large, according to McBride.
Kinda paranoid, don't ya think? |
Milner may have let the attacking pit bull be destroyed, but don't feel too sorry for him. He still has this male pit chained on his property plus one more seen in the video. |
McBride said Milner relinquished his rights to the dog after the animal was taken to the shelter.
Freeman is still recovering. She is badly bruised and has many stitches closing the wounds on her body, but says she is grateful no children were hurt and that she is alive.
