Dog attacked by pit bull put down (due to horrific injuries)

NORFOLK, VA -- Two pit bulls got out of their yard and at least one of them attacked another dog Friday morning.

Norfolk Animal Control was called out to the 800 block of Alma Drive in Norfolk just after 8 a.m. for the report of a vicious animal.

Officers rounded up three pit bulls when they arrived. They determined that they came from a home with a secure backyard, but the owner had left a fence open and that is how they escaped. The owner was initially given a summons for nuisance animals.

It was later determined that another dog was attacked. That dog was taken to a veterinarian and euthanized because of the extent of its injuries. As a result, the pit bulls' owner will likely be given a charge of having a dangerous animal.

According to police spokesman Chris Amos, it appears only one pit bull was involved in the fight with the injured dog.
