UNITED KINGDOM -- The owner of a dog “torn to shreds” by another animal during a walk in a Coventry park has called on the creature’s owner to turn herself in.
Rajvindar Heer’s pet lurcher Frankie was being walked by neighbour Patrick O’Neill when he was attacked by a bull mastiff in Lakeview Park, Coundon.
Frankie had gone over to play with the fawn coloured animal when it grabbed him around his neck and started throwing him around.
The terrified dog attempted to flee but was caught a second time and viciously attacked.
Then, once Frankie had escaped and ran off, the dog turned on Patrick, 65.
Fortunately the dog’s owner managed to control the creature before it attacked again, leaving Patrick wondering where Frankie had gone.
Miraculously the 18-month-old rescue dog, who was bleeding heavily, crossed two busy roads and returned home to Lord Street, Chapelfields.
He was rushed to the nearby PDSA pet hospital, on Barker Butts Lane, where vets managed to save his life.
Patrick said: “I couldn’t have done anything if he had came for me. I was thinking if I run it will chase me and if I shout it will make matters worse.
“It was sheer luck that he was stopped. What would have happened if I had a child with me?
“A muzzle could have stopped all of this from happening.
“It was awful. I could have quite easily collapsed, but Frankie kept me going. I knew I had to find him.
"When I did there was blood everywhere. He was lying in between two wheelie bins.
“I could literally put my hand in and touch his stomach, the hole in his throat was so big.”
Frankie was attacked at 1.40pm on Tuesday May 24. The dog that attacked him is described as a fawn coloured bull mastiff.
After the attack the dog’s owner put her animal back on a lead and ran off. She is described as about 5ft 6ins, slim, in her 40s with long dark hair.
Miss Heer, 36, said that without the help of vets her dog would’ve died.
“They were fantastic,” she said. “I can’t thank them enough. They stitched him up and put in a chest drain.
“In truth I’m just relieved I wasn’t there, looking at him now.
“All we want now is for the owner to have a conscience, realise the full extent of what has happened, and turn herself in.
Miss Heer got Frankie from an animal shelter six months ago. He will make a full recovery.
