VIRGINIA -- A man was found dead on his living room floor by his 18-year-old son after being mauled by one of his pit bulls.

David Quyon Haigler, 38, of Spotsylvania, Virginia, was discovered with wounds to his arms, head and face on Saturday evening.

One of his pit bulls was on the loose in the house, the other was chained up.

Police were called about 6pm, but it is not clear how much earlier the attack had taken place.

Haigler had last been seen early Saturday morning.

The six-year-old killer pit bull initially would not let responding deputies in, Sheriff's Lt. Col. Michael Timm said.

Animal control officers had to be brought in to help officers get into the house.

Mr Timm said the autopsy confirmed that one of pit bulls was responsible for his death.

He said the medical examiner's investigation showed paw marks on the body and evidence of defensive wounds to Mr Haigler's fingers and hands.

Authorities said the room was in disarray when officers managed to get in, fredericksburg.com reports.

There was a wooden baseball bat on a sofa near the body.

Blood was on the floor, on several pieces of furniture and on the walls, court records state.

Mr Timm added that both of the pit bulls are being held at the county animal shelter.

Their fates are still being decided. Neighbours said they couldn't believe the dog would turn on its owner killing him.

Frank Collins said: 'Makes you wonder how you can raise a dog all the way from a puppy and love it and be in the house every day and question what would make it turn on an owner like that.'

Another neighbor, Sherri Harris, has lived near the family for 15 years.

She seemed: 'They seemed like normal family dogs. I’ve never heard them barking.  I’ve heard them rustling around in the backyard, but never barking or acting aggressive in any way.'

The death in a dog attack is the first in the Spotsylvania County area in several years.

Dorothy Sullivan, 82, was in her yard
in Partlow with her own small dog
March 8, 2005, when three roaming pit
bulls attacked and killed her and her
Shih Tzu, Buttons. The dogs
belonged to Large, who lives about
a mile from the Sullivan residence.

In 2005, Dorothy Sullivan, 82, and her small Shih Tzu were mauled to death by a pack of roaming pit bulls outside their Partlow home.

A four-year-old Orange County boy was killed by the family's Rottweiler at home that same year.
