Woman defends self, dog in near pit bull attack

ROYERSFORD, PA -- Fearing her safety was in jeopardy, a woman walking her small dog Monday night used her .38 caliber revolver to scare away a loose pit bull she believed was about to attack her and her dog.

Four police departments were dispatched to a residential area Monday with reports of gunfire at the corner of North 6th Avenue and Oak Street in the township.

Witnesses told police they spotted the woman walking her small dog along the 500 block of Chestnut Street, when a 75-lb. pit bull got loose from its fenced-in yard and charged the woman. The woman told police she discharged her .38 caliber silver Taurus revolver three times, in an attempt to scare away the pit bull.

Police confirmed the woman, 50, of Phoenixville, does have a valid firearms permit from Chester County. No charges were filed against the woman and she was released from the police department to family, following conclusion of the investigation.

The owner of the pit bull told police he would make repairs to his fence to ensure his dog did not get out again.

In addition to Royersford police, Limerick, Upper Providence and Lower Pottsgrove police departments were dispatched to the scene.
