Dog owner fined $1,360 for mauling

CANADA -- The owner of a couple of large dogs that mauled a tiny Shih Tzu to death nearly two weeks ago in Dartmouth was tagged Saturday with four fines totalling $1,360 and the two animals were seized.

"The owner was charged with two counts of owning a dog that runs at large and two counts of owning a dog that attacks a person or animal," Halifax Regional Police said in a news release.

The fine for each of the four charges is $340.21, the release said.

The two marauding dogs, which witnesses described as bull terrier types, descended on the seven-pound Shih Tzu, named Otis, on Spring Avenue at about 11 p.m. on July 11. After a quick sniff, they started tearing at him.

Otis was rushed to a vet but had to be euthanized.
