Joey Porter's dogs get loose, kill neighbor's dog

BAKERSFIELD, CA -- Four dogs owned by NFL star Joey Porter got loose early July 2 from his northwest Bakersfield residence and killed a neighbor's dog.

Porter was cited for not having the dogs on a leash, county Animal Control spokeswoman Kim Rodriguez said. She said it was unclear how the dogs got out of their kennel.

Rodriguez said she doesn't know what kind of arrangement Porter reached with the neighbor whose dog was killed.

Porter's dogs were large and appeared to be half mastiff, half pit bull, she said. He appeared upset about what had happened and apologized to the neighbor.

In 2006, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that two of Porter's dogs got loose from his then-Pennsylvania home and killed a miniature horse on a nearby farm.

A Bakersfield native and one of the city's most recognizable residents, Porter currently plays for the Arizona Cardinals.

It appears that Joey Porter is a pit bull enthusiast so what better way to make a more dangerous dog than to breed mastiffs with pit bulls? Check out this 2008 quote by Mr. Porter to the Miami Herald newspaper:

Porter, an owner of two pit bulls himself, said he doesn’t understand why people are so quick to condemn Vick. Porter contends those same people who are against Vick don’t often like pit bulls anyway.

”That’s the funny thing about it,” Porter said. “If you want to get back on that topic, I’ve got pit bulls and I’ve got to put them under a different breed just to travel. You can’t even fly pit bulls anywhere.

So it’s not like he was fighting cocker spaniels or something, something they like. They don’t even too much care about pit bulls.”
