MITCHELL, SD -- Mitchell police officer and a pit bull were OK after a weekend incident that involved gunshots, though the dog's owners agreed to remove it from town.
Public Safety Chief Lyndon Overweg says an officer who responded to a report Saturday of a dog pinning a 7-year-old girl against a house and scratching her was confronted by the dog and fired two shots, missing both times.
The dog ran off but was tracked down and secured by the owners. The girl was not seriously hurt and no charges were filed. The chief says the officer was deemed justified in firing his weapon.
The dog was impounded and declared dangerous, and the owners agreed to remove it from city limits rather than have it euthanized.
