When Julie Nolan heard a loud "bang" in the back of her Tucson Street home on Friday, her daughter ran to see what happened.
"She's like mom, mom, there's a dog trying to get in."
Nolan said a pit bull mix was trying to break through her door to get to her dog, Max. But the door was too heavy.
Max was saved only b/c the pit bull couldn't break through the glass storm door |
She said the dog then ran down the street to her neighbor's home, where a small white Bichon Frise was barking in the doorway.
"The pit bull ran up to the house, ripped open the screen, ripped out the dog and started attacking the dog," said Parma Animal Warden Julie Kocik.
She said the Bichon's owner tried to get the pit bull off of the small dog and was bit on the hand in the process.
Parma police then arrived, cited the owner and Kocik took the pit bull.
"The dog went into a home and pulled a dog out. To me, that was an issue. I could not safely leave that dog there," she said.
Because the pit bull bit a person, and a dog, officials said the pit bull could not be safely quarantined without putting someone else at risk of an injury. Parma does not typically quarantine animals because they do not have the facility to do so.
Officials also said the owner's of the pit bull were visiting from Iowa and were going to return home before the ten day period.
"It was determined the best thing to do would be to euthanize the dog and test it for rabies," said Veterinarian Dr. Ronald Busack of Bartels-Busack Pet Hospital Resort and Spa.
Doesn't Ohio have a law regarding pit bulls? Or doesn't it apply for people 'visiting' with their pit bulls? |
"It was probably a good idea. You know could you ever trust the dog again," said Nolan.
The small dog and its guardian are recovering from their injuries.
