Pit Bull attacks hiker at state park

ILLINOIS -- An Illinois woman was bitten in the face by a dog as it was being walked in Peninsula State Park in Door County on June 29.

According to a Door County Sheriff report, Dawn Jones, DeKalb, said she was walking on the Eagle Trail at 2:45 p.m. when she was attacked and bitten in the right cheek by a red/brown pit bull that was on a retractable leash. The dog was being walked by a family of five when it jumped at her, Jones said.

She was treated at the Nor Door Clinic in Sister Bay. A park ranger followed up to locate the animal's owner. The Sierra pit bull mix had been vaccinated and was quarantined at least 10 days at the home of its owner, Rafael Rivadeneira, Elmhurst, Ill.

[NOTE: Apprently Rafael is some sort of politician in Illinois and his wife is an author. They're one of those middle-class families that get a pit bull to make a point; that (in their minds, anyway) they're much more enlightened than the average person who fears pit bulls. Caryn's website says:
Caryn lives in the western suburbs of Chicago with her husband, Rafael, their three kids and one ("rescued") pit bull terrier.
