Singer JC Connington tried to fend off the dog as cat Pepe was crushed between its jaws in his front garden in South View Road, Hornsey.
Pet cat Pepe was mauled to death by a dog in Hornsey. |
He held the British shorthair cat, who was rescued from a shelter five years ago, as she died minutes later on June 27.
The 29-year-old singer with band Junkstar, said: “I ran around to try and rescue Pepe and I saw the dog had her in its jaws, her head on one side and legs the other.
“It was throwing her around and then the dog just spat her out like a rag doll. Then the dog leapt at me. I was still screaming and trying to get my cat off the floor. I picked up my cat who was convulsing and she had a few last breaths and she died in my arms.”
JC and girlfriend Haruka Kuroda, the voice of the Noodle character in Damon Albarn’s band Gorillaz, are devastated.
He suspected the dog was a pit bull breed and reported the attack to vets and police, who visited the dog’s owners.
They told police the dog had accidentally escaped from the house during a children’s birthday party and they were unaware of the attack.
A police spokeswoman said: “Officers have spoken to the owners of both animals, all of whom are understandably very upset by the incident.
“Police have given words of advice to the owner of the dog. There is not enough evidence for police to take any other action at this time however Hornsey Safer Neighbourhoods Team will continue to monitor the situation.”
She confirmed police dog specialists were consulted and said the animal is not believed to be a pitbull breed. But the singer, who described Pepe as his “best friend”, said the police’s response was “pathetic”.
He has leafleted neighbouring houses to alert other cat owners about the attack.
