Small dog dies after attack by pit bull

SALEM, OR -- A northeast Salem woman’s small dog died Wednesday night after it was attacked by a pit bull terrier.

The incident happened around 9:30 p.m. in a fenced backyard of a home in the 500 block of Tryon Avenue NE.

The small dog's owner, Belinda Joye, sustained a small puncture to the palm of one of her hands when she tried to get the pit bull to release his grip on her dog.

Salem Police responded to the scene and attempted to locate the pit bull terrier’s owner but were but were not able to do so, said Salem Police Lt. Jim Anglemier.

The 50 pound yellow-brown pit bull terrier was found and taken to Marion County Dog Control.

The dog was wearing a leather collar and a metal pinch collar, but there were no identification tags on either collar, Anglemier said.

Anyone with information about the pit bull or its owner, is asked to contact Salem police at (503) 588-6123.
