Carrie Kayser said her cousin and her husband were out walking the dog, a Pomeranian named Sweet Heart, about 7:30 p.m. Monday when an unleashed Rottweiler leapt from the back of a red Jeep Wrangler parked nearby and attacked them.
Dustin Kayser, 4, sits with his Pomeranian, named Sweet Heart, who was attacked by a Rottweiler in New Milford on Monday. |
The Rottweiler bit the Pomeranian and wouldn't let go, Kayser said, while her cousin and her husband, Rob, tried to pull the bigger dog off.
Her husband also ran over to help after dialing the police, Kayser said, but the dog only relented when its owner and two other men emerged from one of the condos.
The dog's owner finally corralled the animal, then got into the Jeep and drove off without apologizing, Kayser claimed.
She said her 4-year-old son, Dustin, was particularly devastated by the attack.
"My husband spoke with the officer last night, but there were still no leads as to who the owner of the other dog is," Kayser said in an email Thursday. "I would hate to see this happen again to another dog or person."
New Milford police have said the investigation into the incident was referred to the Regional Animal Control. An animal control officer refused to comment about the investigation Thursday.
Kayser said the Pomeranian suffered multiple hematomas and two broken ribs. She said the dog is expected to recover, but the family has incurred about $2,500 in veterinarian bills.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Regional Animal Control Officer Audrey McKay at 860-354-2138.
