Alaska State Trooper shoots dog

FAIRBANKS, AK — An Alaska State Trooper in North Pole shot a dog in self-defense Friday, according to a trooper news release.

Troopers had been called to the home at 12:05 a.m. because of a verbal dispute. The dog, which troopers described as a “pitt bull terrier,” was placed on a dog run in front of the house at the request of a trooper.

When a second trooper who was unaware of the dog approached the house, the dog reportedly growled and barked as the troopers backed away. The dog lunged, and the trooper drew his weapon and fired, hitting the animal in the head, according to the release.

The owner took the dog to a veterinarian and told troopers it would survive.

No charges were pressed as a result of the verbal dispute, which did not escalate, troopers said.
