Animal Control Officer Attacked by Pit Bull

FLORIDA — A Pinellas County animal control officer was attacked by two pit bulls while investigating a complaint Friday night, police said.

The animal services worker, who has not been identified, sustained serious bites to his arms as he and a St. Petersburg police officer tried to remove a pair of loose dogs that had wandered into a back yard at 2165 Country Club Court N.

Residents there called police at about 8:15 p.m. Friday after the pit bulls followed their own dog into the fenced back yard, police said.

"The complainant called the police to have the dogs, which were becoming increasingly aggressive, removed from his yard," officials said in a statement.

The dogs were corralled to a porch, but they attacked when the animal control worker arrived.

The St. Petersburg police officer then shot and killed one of the dogs. The other dog was captured and removed.

The animals' owner has not yet been identified, police said.
