Elderly dog attack victim improves, no charges filed

FLORIDA -- The condition of an 84-year-old grandfather, viciously attacked by two dogs over the weekend, improved on Monday.

According to his family and the hospital, John Ashmore was upgraded from serious to stable condition.

Pasco County deputies have also released the names of the owners of the two boxers involved in the attack. Maurice Vankinscott and Olga Melendez, the owners, live just a few houses down from Ashmore.

Vankinscott told investigators the animals managed to get through a hole in a backyard fence, escaping not only on Sunday, but on Saturday as well.

"They seem like very, very nice people," said neighbor Tammy Goodman, "they haven't been there but maybe a couple of months."

The couple wasn't home on Monday, and neighbors say they haven't returned since speaking with detectives a day earlier.

No charges have been filed, but deputies say it is still an open case, with culpable negligence charges possible, which would likely be misdemeanors.

"At this point, there are no charges, but it is still under investigation," said sheriff's office spokesperson Kevin Doll.

Detectives are also trying to determine if the dogs have a violent history, but animal services are closed on Sunday and Monday.
