Kearney officer shoots pit bull

NEBRASKA — A Kearney Police Department officer shot and killed a pit bull after the dog attacked him at a Kearney mobile home park.

Around 6:30 a.m. Sunday, Officer Mike Eggen responded to a report of a pit bull being aggressive to other dogs and residents at Countryside Trailer Court in southwest Kearney. Eggen found the dog and was bitten in his left calf, said Lt. Dennis Lewis.

The dog left puncture wounds on Eggen's leg then ran away. Eggen followed the dog and shot him with his service weapon. The dog was tested for rabies. Lewis said the dog was current on his vaccination.

The dog's owner, a 33-year-old Kearney man living at Countryside, was cited for failure to restrain his dog and confinement of a vicious animal.

Eggen is a 30-year veteran of the department and was a K-9 handler from 1990 to 1995.
