SPRAGGS, PA -- Southwest Regional police said they are investigating after a pit bull mix dog attacked a neighbor's dog in Spraggs on Saturday.
Channel 11's Dave Bondy spoke to the pit bull's owner who said he is sorry for what happened. Bondy reported that the owner of the dog may be forced to euthanize the pit bull.
Police said the dog attacked a 5-year-old Jack Russell, which is now recovering from its injuries.
"My girlfriend was inside and heard something crying. She looked out and the pit bull had my dog down and was dragging it," said Patrick Gorbey.
Gorbey said he rushed outside with a shovel and tried to save his dog.
"I had to come out and fight him off with a shovel, that's the sad part. You have little kids running in the area and stuff. [The owners] should do something, put it on a stronger chain," Gorbey said.
Gene Smouse, the pit bulls owner, said there is an explanation for his dog's actions.
"There was a female pit in heat down the hill and he got loose. It's called male dominance. If they're not neutered, he is going to do something," Smouse said.
Smouse said he is willing to pay all of the vet bills for his neighbor's dog. He said pit bulls get a wrap [sic] and that he trusts his dog so much that he allows his 16-month-old daughter to sleep next to him.
"You can't say he's a mean dog because he got into one fight. That’s the only fight he has been into in his life. He has never threatened to bite a human," Smouse said.
