Police fatally shot "aggressive" pit bull inside Colorado Springs home

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO -- Police fatally shot an "aggressive" pit bull in Colorado Springs last night while responding to reports of gunfire.

The incident happened at about 6 p.m. at 4110 Shining Way, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department crime blotter.

Neighbors told officers that a man had left the home and drove off in a blue Jaguar after firing a shot at the house.

When police arrived to investigate they were met by an aggressive pit bull and people inside the home would not allow entry, the blotter said.

A person inside eventually responded and officers went into the home. A struggle between officers and a man inside the home ensued and a second pit bull came at police in an "aggressive manner" and it was shot.

The dog died at the scene.

People inside the house told officers they didn't know anything about the initial reports of gunfire, but several neighbors told officers about it.

One of three adults inside the home, Karissa Chavez, 31, was arrested on two outstanding misdemeanor warrants.

Police said Chavez "admitted to drinking alcohol and taking prescription narcotics." Three Chavez' children, ages 14, 11 and 6, were at the home and police said their mother told them not to "open the door" to officers when they had arrived.

Chavez was also cited on suspicion of child abuse and failure to obey a lawful order, police said.

Officers later found the Jaguar and a man who had been at the house earlier, police said. A gun was recovered and an investigation into the alleged shot fired at the home is ongoing. The man in the Jaguar was not arrested. Police did not say whether the gun was seized as part of the investigation.

Further details on the officer, or officers, who fatally shot the pit bull were not released.
