Police Officer Shoots Dog That Attacked Two Cyclists

TEXAS - A dog that attacked an off-duty deputy, and then a woman, was shot Thursday night by CCPD.

It happened around 8:15 at Brawner Parkway and Fort Worth.

Longtime Nueces County Deputy David Garcia was riding his bicycle through the area when he noticed a pit bull hot on his tail.

"It came out after me and bit me pretty bad on my leg," says Garcia.

The injured pit bull was dragged out from under the
house and then hauled away by Animal Control

Officers arrived on scene and tried to control the dog, and nearly managed to get it into the backseat of a patrol car.

However, things got out of hand a second time when a second cyclist rode past, and the dog charged after her.

Neighbor Aurora Segura says, "The dog ran after her when she was on the bike and grabbed her leg. That's when the police officer went over there and shot him three times."

"What he did is not easy to do, it's a very hard decision," explains Garcia, "but I saw the officer, at that point he had no choice."

The dog wasn't dead though.

Instead, it hid under a house.

With the help of an Animal Control officer, the crew was finally to get able to the pit bull out and contained.

"I guess it shows you that anything can happen anywhere at any time, unexpectedly," says Garcia, "so you always have to be careful and be on your guard, which I was, but it can happen at anytime."

The deputy and the woman went to the hospital for treatment.

Animal Control is also investigating the attack and trying to track down the owner of the dog.

Once found, that person will be given a citation.
