Deputies shoot, kill dog in Central Kitsap

WASHINGTON -- A Kitsap County sheriff's deputy shot and killed a dog last week after it charged at him, according to Kitsap County sheriff's reports.

Deputies were called to the 3000 block of NE Third Street in Central Kitsap shortly after 7 a.m. Aug. 30 for a report of two dogs attacking another dog.

When they got there, the deputies entered a fenced backyard and found what they described as a pit bull with blood on its face and chest. But the dog was "panting and wagging his tail," deputies said, and was nonthreatening.

A dog began barking from the house on the property. Soon, to their surprise, that dog, also described as a pit bull, came charging at deputies, reports said.

A deputy attempted to use pepper spray. When the dog, "barking ferociously," charged again, another deputy, who had a rifle, shot twice and believed he'd hit it at least once, reports said. When the dog attacked again the deputy shot his rifle about five more times, hitting the animal at least three times. The dog fell to the ground and died.

The other dog deputies had seen earlier ran into the house and didn't come outside again. Deputies located a third dog, also described as a pit bull, which was severely injured.

Kitsap County Animal Control assisted in helping the injured dog and removing the deceased dog.

Deputies left a message with the dogs' owner, who later called back, deputies said. Later in the day, the deputy who shot the animal met with the dog's owner and explained why he took the actions he did.
