Grandfather charged with involuntary manslaughter in Bladen County dog mauling case

NORTH CAROLINA -- The grandfather of a newborn who was mauled to death by family dogs was charged Wednesday morning with involuntary manslaughter, authorities said.

The arrest of Nelson Ernest Camerino, 49, of the 10000 block of North College Street in Clarkton, was the result of an indictment returned Friday by the Bladen County grand jury.

The indictment was sealed until Camerino was taken into custody, said Capt. Rodney Hester of the Bladen County Sheriff's Office.

Camerino's bail was set at $150,000.

The baby, Addyson Camerino, was 9 days old when she was killed on Aug. 30, authorities have said.

The baby's mother, Chelsea Lynn Brigman, 18, was staying with the Camerinos when the incident happened, authorities said.

She was charged Friday with involuntary manslaughter after the grand jury returned an indictment against her.

The baby's father, Charles Nelson Camerino, 21, was in the Cumberland County Jail the day of the attack, having been charged with theft and fraud offenses, authorities said.

He was bailed out the day after the child was killed.

Lawmen have been tight-lipped as to the details of the incident that happened at the Camerino residence.

Bladen Coroner Hubert Kinlaw has said the infant died of head trauma and internal injuries.

The dogs were seized and taken to the Bladen County animal shelter.
