Hendersonville man charged in venomous snake seizure

NORTH CAROLINA -- Authorities charged a Hendersonville man Monday after they said scores of reptiles were found at the man's home two weeks ago.

Henderson County deputies said they served a search warrant at 65 Doe Trail after an investigation into an injury caused by an exotic venomous snake bite.

Deputies said they found 60 live reptiles (including cobras, vipers and Gila monsters) in the single-wide mobile home. They said the animals were seized and given to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences for further investigation.

About 100 of the animals were dead and frozen, according to the Henderson County Sheriff's Office.

On Monday, Walter Kidd was charged with 46 violations of a state law that forbids the possession of venomous reptiles without strict safety precautions in place. He was also issued six citations for owning reptiles on the state's protected wild animal list. Kidd was also charged with possessing five or more native reptile species without a permit.

Kidd was being held at the Henderson County Detention Facility on $23,000 bond.
