Williamsburg police officer on foot patrol shoots pit bull

A police officer who was on foot patrol shot a pit bull this morning in the 1800 block of Richmond Road.

The officer was in the parking lot of a hotel and was returning to his vehicle about 12:30 a.m. when he was charged by the dog, police wrote in a news release. The officer tried to avoid the dog and fired once when it was within an arm’s length.

The shot wounded the dog, which was taken by its owner to a veterinarian for treatment, the release says.

Police said the dog was not on a leash when it ran toward the officer.

The incident is under investigation.
