Child injured in pit bull attack

FLORIDA -- A child has been hospitalized after being attacked by a pit bull.

An 8-year-old boy was attacked by a loose pit bull in the 300 block of Southeast First Street in Deerfield Beach, Sunday evening.

The victim, Nick Garvey, and other boys were riding their bikes when the pit bull charged toward them.

"He tried to run, but that dog kept holding onto his hand," said Devon Andrews, who witnessed the attack.

The victim ran into a house to get away from the pit bull, but Broward Sheriff's Office deputies say, the dog followed him and went into the house.

Homeowner Sharon Haynes eventually got the dog out of the house, which put an end to the attack.

"[Nick] looked pretty bad. He was bit on his face, his arm and his leg. A big chunk out of his leg," said Haynes.

BSO Air Rescue airlifted Garvey to Broward General Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. BSO reports that the child endured a laceration to the face and multiple bites, but he was conscious and breathing while being transported.

The pit bull is now with Broward County Animal Care and Regulation.

In the video, the owner says, "I'm not gonna talk
unless you pay me!"

The owner of the pit bull did not want to speak about the incident, but Anthony Rattray, the victim's great uncle, had words for the owner. "Shouldn't have a dog like that if you can't kept it locked up," he said.

According to BSO deputies, the owner of the dog has been cited for not restraining the animal.
