Dog who attacked teen shot by officer

MICHIGAN -- We're learning new information about a vicious dog attack in Grand Rapids.

14-year-old Jordan Forbes was badly bitten Wednesday afternoon at a house on Dunham Street.

Police say the officers who responded to the scene were forced to shoot and kill the dog.

Jordan's mother says her son was discharged from the hospital around 8:00 pm. She says she almost fainted when she saw Jordan's injuries, saying that the dog who attacked her son had gone for the meat of his leg and taken a big chunk out.

Now neighbors who responded to the cries for help are being credited with saving Jordan's life.

It was a dramatic scene, caught on cell phone video, as a ten-year-old girl reacted to police shooting her dog, Blue, after officers say it viciously attacked 14-year-old Jordan Forbes, who was visiting friends.

“He was faint, and he kept saying 'I think I'm going to die,'” said neighbor Tammy Robertson, “and his eyes rolled back into his head.”

Robertson saw Jordan right after he escaped the indoor attack and said the dog just kept coming after the boy.

“He had already tasted the blood, so he wanted to finish the job,” said Robertson.

Jordan's mother says her son told her that when Blue snapped, he lifted a three-year-old onto a bed and out of harms way and then the dog attacked him.

The kids ran from the house, one of them breaking a window screen to escape, but the dog followed Jordan outside, pouncing on his leg.
Neighbor Lonnie Watson says he got Jordon onto his enclosed porch, but says the dog just wouldn't let go.

“I was hitting him with the door, and that's what made him let that kid go,” said Watson, “and then he attacked those other two kids and they jumped up on top of that car.”

“The two boys were like this, on top of the white car,” said Robertson.

Robertson says Jordan's friends were shaking with fear on top of the car, while on the ground, Blue was relentless.

“Hitting his head on the car door and growling at them and trying to jump up,” said Robertson.

After police arrived on the scene, they say Blue turned on them.

“The cop had to do what he had to do,” said Watson. “He shot him, because if he hadn't of shot him, the cop would have got attacked.”

After the shooting, Blue's owner, too young to understand, broke down crying.

“Why didn't you shoot me?” said the young girl.

Neighbors say police did their best to console the young girl while helping Jordan.

“If the boys wouldn't have gotten the help, then it could have been life threatening,” said Robertson.

Jordan's mother says her son received countless stitches for his injuries and may have to see a hand surgeon this week.

Newschannel 3 spoke to the ten-year-old girl later in the evening who said she now understood why police had to kill her dog and says she was just happy Jordan was okay.

So far, no charges have been filed in the attack.
