Family Shocked that Pit Bull Attacked 2 year old

WISCONSIN -- For Michael and Bessie Tolbert, they say it's been beyond painful.

"Very hard it's like a family member is dead and my other family member is in the hospital," said Bessie Tolbert.

Their Pit bull attacked their 2 year old nephew Monday, latching on to the child's face and not letting go.

The boy's father used a [pocket] knife to stab at the animal to get it to release the boy.

According to the family, the child is recovering from surgery at Children's Hospital.

"I jumped on him instantly. As fast as I could get off the couch," says Michael Tolbert.

He says he was trying to pry his pit bull's mouth off his 2 year old nephew's face.

"I looked for a breaking stickto pry the jaws and he was just not listening..."

"The baby quit making sounds and the father said, 'Oh God, please don't die on me.'"

"Visually I am scarred... the bone was dramatic. He did break it [the baby's jaw]."

They're also grieving over their pit bull, Dice, who they say isn't vicious and hadn't bitten anyone before.

The pit bull's owner tells CBS 58's Rielle Creighton that they voluntarily put the dog down.
"Any breed can do this," says Bessie Tolbert.

They also wanted to make it clear the dog never shook the baby.
