INDIANA -- The Starke County Sheriff’s Department responded to a dog attack call Thursday. When officers arrived on scene, at 2220 East 200 South in Knox, they saw Marshall Garlach had extensive injuries to his entire body after being attacked by two American Bulldogs.
Marshall Garlach saw his neighbor’s child in his front yard and didn’t know if his neighbor knew he was at his house, according to the police report.
Garlach walked the boy home. He opened the gate to enter the property and walked the boy up to the door. It was when Garlach started back toward the gate and the attack began. He said the male dog knocked him to the ground and then the female started to attack him too. Garlach told police that he didn’t know how he did it, but he got away to call 9-1-1.
Garlach’s left ear was bitten off in the attack and the bites on his arms went to the bone.
While police were talking to the dog’s owner, Candace Simmons, the male dog charged at police and was halted by verbal commands. The final time the dog charged at police, it didn’t stop, even with commands, and the officer had to shoot the dog to stop his aggressive charge. The owner admitted to police that the dog had attempted to attack her at times also.
Simmons was cited for Criminal Recklessness and Harboring a Non-Immunized Dog.
The Starke County Humane Society was called to the scene to remove the two dogs and testing will be done on the animals in regards to rabies vaccination
