CANADA -- A ferocious dog attacked and killed a small dog in St. John's Thursday.
Mike Gillan said he heard a dog yelping in fear around 3 p.m. in the Georgestown area.
Gillan ran out of his Hayward Avenue home and found a large pit bull thrashing its head, with its jaws locked on a small poodle.
“There was blood and quite a bit of shaking going on. It was really a horrible sight," Gillan told CBC News.
Gillan and the owner of the poodle kicked the pit bull in the head repeatedly until it finally dropped the small dog and ran down the road. By then, the poodle's lungs had been punctured.
"We wrapped it in a blanket and took him to the animal hospital,” said Gillan.
The poodle later died.
Gillan said he fears the attack could have been even worse.
"Thanks to be the Lord it wasn't a child,” he said.
Gillan said the police and the city were contacted.
He did not know if the pit bull and its owner have been found.
